I am afraid that on the day of a depressing results like today's where we did not only lose but deserved to loseit is difficult to be very positive about scores. However congratulations to Zen who was the only one to predict not only that we would lose but also the score - his gigantic score of 170 not only reflects that but takes him well clear at the top. Wow - what an interesting week. A total score of 2,354 nearly double the average despite the fact that nobody predicted a correct Watford score. That was in fact the only game that nobody got right - even though 24 out of 29 got the "win" correct. 63 people got at least one correct score - the average is about 20 and for the first week in ages nobody predicted a unique score. Best of the day was Andy -with an impressive 157 - he has obviously been learning from the "boy" and got 5 correct scores and 3 other correct results. However Matej was not so shabby either and scored 92 - he would have moved up a place too had not Hornette been sneaky and returned to posting after a few weeks' sabbatical. Only for a matter of interest I thought I would publish what the table would look like if I had not introduced the 30 points "top score of the week" bonus. Funnily enough half of our predictors have won this award and only 4 more than once. Zen has 4, Saxet 3; Ghost and Brag 2 each. 23 out of the 32 predictors are in exactly the same position as they would have been without it. Only 4 are more than one position different. Two have gained 2 spots Ghost and (ironically) Gordon and two suffered Cologne (2) and Chris (3). However the total awarded of 630 so far out of 30,430 points is marginal. The final figure in the table below is how many positions higher (+ve number) or lower (-ve number) and 0 = the same you would have been without the bonus. My conclusion? Probably not worth continuing next year although it does give a one week boost each week to someone. Leo, you put in all the hard work so at the end of the day, whatever you decide is the way it will be. You must do whatever is easier for you!
I enjoy doing it and appreciate the feedback of others. It is not easier or harder to do as once I have set up the spreadsheet all the hard work is automated. I try to keep it fresh by making small changes - some will work and others not - this one does not seem to have made much difference. I do tend to agree with one earlier suggestion though - that 25 points for a unique score is too much - I might reduce that next year a bit.
I would certainly be in favour of reducing the 25 point bonus Leo (also removing the weekly top score bonus completely) - this is about the first week where someone has achieved top score without the assistance of those 25 points - in the event of someone correctly being the only one to tip a Watford result this means an automatic 90 points, and that is too many for one result because someone else would have to get 5 results correct to better it. However, as others have said, you need to feel happy with the system you are using.
Thanks Cologne. I agree - a couple of the highest scores have been due to a unique Watford score. I am also thinking of changing that and not doubling the unique score bonus for Watford as it has meant that one lucky result is too much. I will of course only run a system I am happy to use but I want as many people as possible to enjoy predicting and if the scoring system can reflect a lot of people's preference that is good.
I don't agree, Leo. I think your scoring system is very good. People should be encouraged to really go for what score they think is going to happen, not just most probable. That's why rewarding eg someone getting 5-0 yesterday should be worth more than a standard 2-1 that anybody will get. Predicting the unlikely should be disproportionately rewarded IMHO. You do a super job. I like the tinkering, but I would advise against anything that rewards pat predictions.
You've caused a lot of tears in our house, I hope you're proud, Hornette. Matej was fine - but I was devastated.
Leo, I think that you will find that Hackney made his predictions so late that he only did 4 of the ten. His predictions are in the middle of this weeks predictions.
Leo, could you check the scores again ? - according to my reckoning I only got 36 this time - 20 for the Derby result, 6 for Watford. Some of the other scores look a bit questionable as well.
OK - think that is OK. Confess I did not look for a posting from Hackney for last week amongst this week's posting- have not done any of those yet. Cologne - I did not spot that you put your predictions in a different order to the standard so posted in the order I had set them out resulting in your wrong score. Thanks for your honesty - your total was correct. I have not spotted any other errors but.......... Most people who posted after Saxet followed his game order, not the correct one. This resulted in the predictions being placed against the wrong matches. I should have noticed but due to the FA Cup predictions running at the same time I missed it. Sorry all - I will correct tomorrow but ignore the previous table which I have now removed.
