Mauricio Pochettino how is he doing?

Roughly half way through the season and there are signs that Spurs are improving as a team It would be interesting to see where we are in our support or otherwise for Pochettino.

Choose from the options in the poll and perhaps give us your reasons for your position.
 
Aren't options 1, 3 and 4 kind of interchangeable? I'll go for one of them. 3 years seems a bit much, though. I hear 2 mentioned a lot and that sounds more reasonable.
 
I think he's doing alright...we're playing better football imo and I like the way he's not afraid to play the young lads, we've also improved since the start of the season so hopefully we'll continue in that vein. Maybe if he gets a few of the players he wants it'll get even better
 
You have to give him 3 years. I like what he's doing with somebody else's team but he needs time to get his own players in.
 
Like van Gaal at Utd, good performances from individuals are papering over the cracks for him too often. Lloris, Eriksen and more recently, Kane have all made up for average team performances with important individual contributions. Like van Gaal, he's also benefited from other teams in the top six going backwards this season. Otherwise, results, points and position in the table would have been a lot less palatable than they are now.

As has been said before, if he has been appointed for the long term, he needs the chance to bring in and ship out players so that he can mould his own team and address deficiencies in the team/squad.
 
I think that he is doing OK. It has taken time for the players to adapt to his way of playing but do seem to be more of a team that is progressing. The benefits of the new training complex are beginning to be seen as the young players fit seamlessly into the first team squad now. We need to keep this progress up and so we must allow Pochettino at least 3 years and hopefully longer. The annual manager change does us no good whatsoever.
 
desperatly need stability and give the manager a chance to build his team, the signs are his method's are beginning to work,but they need time

Not sure how he's doing well is interchangeable with not impressed?

I've gone for give him 3 years. Close between 1 and 5 for me, but the preformance levels dip too often to choose 1 yet - but getting there.
 
I haven't made up my mind yet, a few games a go I wanted him gone but things seem now to be improving. There does seem to be a problem in getting this squad to play at tempo and use their ball skills to advantage, they appear all to keen to drop back into crab like movement, at the drop of a goal. Is he a strong enough personality for this job does he carry the required authority? He has not convinced me yet.

That's a fair point but I actually think the league is a lot stronger than ever before. Other than ourselves and Burnley everyone seems to have spent at least their TV money bump and whilst not everyone's got it right, enough have to make it noticeably more difficult for sides trying to win every week.

I'm sort of between the different options in the poll at the moment. We're not performing particularly well with any consistency at the moment, we're just tending to be a bit better than the opposition in most wins(like last season really) but I'm probably more convinced than ever that Pochettino's the right man to take us forward so I'm very happy we've got him.
 
1 for me.

I was very happy with his initial appointment, admittedly de Boer was my top pick but I was still confident Poch was a manager who could carry this club forward.

Half a season gone and I still believe that, with even more conviction and the belief he may even achieve something special if backed by the board and trusted by the players.

Performances have at times been frustrating, but that has been the case under his past two predecessors so it's not as if we've not been used to it in recent seasons, though we are starting to equal out as many good games as there are bad, it's only been about 4-5 weeks since Poch has pretty much installed what he sees as his first XI now and I think that's showing. Palace aside, we racked up a good amount of wins including taking a combined 4 points from Utd and Chelsea in the busy festive period, something I don't think many would've thought was possible if you'd asked them a couple months or so back.

The likes of Lloris, Vertonghen, Bentaleb, Mason, Chadli, Eriksen and Kane are playing at top form under Poch, with most of those likely to improve due to their young age, under both AVB and Sherwood, we only had about 2 or 3 players who were playing at a level I felt respectable and worthy of this club. The likes of Davies, Rose and Townsend have also had solid games and I feel will improve with more work and game time.

We're still in the hunt for a top 4 place, in to the knockouts of Europa, in the semi's of the Capital One and in the 4th round of the FA Cup all while he's hardly dipped into the transfer market bar adding a bit of squad strength. Not bad at all if you ask me.
 
Sitting on the fence-easy option.

Like the team, one week we are good (Chelsea) and the next week Palace. Some of his decisions I agree with, then some I find inexplicable.
How much is down to his tactics and how much is thanks we have a Kane and a Lloris?

Therefore I will decide at the end of the season.
 
I'm another "don't know" I'm afraid. One week I think, yeah he's slowly getting there, then the next week we're back to being a disorganised shambles. I realise that he inherited somebody else's squad, but we do have some decent players so surely there has to be a half way decent, functional team in there somewhere.

Is this another case of a manager trying to impose a system on players to whom it's clearly not suited?

Being a Spurs supporter has never been for those of a nervous disposition, but I'm getting tired of peeking at my TV from between my fingers every time we're on. Some stability would be nice for a change.

Very happy with him.

Took a while to weed out the players who either weren't good enough or didn't have the right attitude but once that was done we really got going.

Love the way we don't fold and keep going until the final whistle.

He's giving youth a chance which is good to see.

Still believe we need a better CB CM ST to help push us on

It's not always about the abillity of a player though. Fabregas wasn't transformed by Mourinho, he was just brought back to playing in conditions that suit him.

Allardyce was talking about Martinez and young managers in general at the start of the week and how there's a willingness to become more tactically flexible as you get older and more experienced. I think it's definitely the case with Pochettino, he has a style of play that he's confident he can get results with and he was brought in to continue that style of play here. Yeah our squad's lost some strength due to the fact that not all players suit how he wants us to play but that's nothing unusual, we didn't go through 2 managers in a season because we wanted to carry on how we were doing. There's no point getting a manager(particularly a young one) in and then getting them to try an implement a system they are unfamiliar with or don't like, Pochettino was sold as seen to the board and I'm sure they wanted to see a continuation of what he had at Southampton rather than trying to get the same results using totally different methods with us.

Stability is definitely what's needed in areas at the club but it's clear without some changes we'd be in danger of going backwards. Whilst it's very difficult to progress upwards from a regular top 6 side there's also a big gap between us and the rest below. Over the years several different clubs have finished top 6 or threatened to challenge the big 4/5 but we're the only ones that have stayed there consistently, Start finishing out of the top 6 and I think we'd be in for a big drop. Everton are probably the closest club to us in terms of regularly challenging the top 5/6 and even they struggle to string 2 good seasons in a row together.

Positive spin on our current longer term situation.
The fact, like you've correctly said, that we've sort of cemented ourselves as the "best of the rest" when you look at it over the span of about 5 years makes it even more galling when a team like Liverpool comes out of nowhere and nicks "our"* CL spot. And it would be even more galling if Southampton, or gasp, West Ham did it this season


*i'm not claiming we have a right to it, but the hierachy over the last fews years would suggest that if a club dropped out, like Utd did last season, it would be us that succeeded them.

The key thing he's doing right is adapting his tactics to fit the players. At the start of the season the likes of Adebayor, Kaboul and Capoue were all nailed-on for starting places, but that's changed significantly in the last couple of months and we've been playing better as a result, plus we've picked up a bloody minded will to win games that has helped us in recent weeks (such as the games against Hull and Burnley)

Compare this to AVB last season: he rigidly stuck to his tactical plan which may have made us defensively solid but lacked any attacking momentum, then he switched it overnight to make it more attacking and it backfired horrifically.
