Jermain Defoe set on Premier League return with QPR after MLS move turns sour

Harry Redknapp has signed the former England striker two times in the past and is keen on bringing him on board to ease the burden on the in-form Charlie Austin

Jermain Defoe has flown back to London to resolve his future - and is eyeing a move to Queens Park Rangers.

Harry Redknapp has admitted he wants to sign former England striker Defoe after his move to Toronto turned sour.

The QPR boss has voiced concerns about whether they can afford it but he last week flew to Malaysia to discuss transfer targets with chairman Tony Fernandes.

Defoe, who was also a target for Leicester in the summer, remains hopeful that he can sort out a move to QPR and has discussed terms.

QPR have also been looking at Blackburn striker Rudy Gustede, 26, as they look to bring in extra firepower in January.

But Fernandes has made it clear he will not break the bank this time and leave the club's finances in danger if they go down.

Defoe's current club Toronto insisted last week that they expected the striker to remain with them for the 2015 MLS season.

The former Spurs star was signed by the Canadian club as an expensive Designated Player as they looked to make an assault on the 2014 MLS Cup.

However, head coach Ryan Nelsen was sacked and Toronto finished the season as also-rans in the Eastern Conference, failing to make the play-offs despite Defoe's 11 goals in 19 matches.

He also featured in only three of their final 16 league matches, with Toronto president Tim Leiweke stating he didn't expect to see Defoe feature for the club again.

But last week general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said the club are counting on him leading their attack when the re-shaped league returns next year.

Speaking on Thursday, when asked about Defoe's future he said: "We’re planning on him getting back.

“The player has never indicated that he doesn't want to be here. There is a community around him that has indicated in various ways that they can be here or elsewhere, but, from him, no.”

Nevertheless, Bezbatchenko did declare that the club has contingency plans if an offer comes in that they cannot refuse.

"If someone comes and there's an offer, we'll consider it," he added.

"We’re planning to have him on our team, but we have contingencies."

Reading between the lines they are waiting for a silly-money bid, I hope we don't go down that road. I'd prefer him on loan with the option to buy if we stay up but can't really see that happening. Crouch might be a better option if we're going for experience...

Yes, he's flown into London to prostitute himself to the highest bidder.
We keep hearing that he wants to join up with Arry one more time but the truth is, he could have done the deal back in Canada if he was genuine about joining us.
Keep it low key, earn some good bucks whilst showing the club and supporters that he means business but no .................... here just putting out the vibe for the most pounds being offered.

So Defoe flies home during the Christmas period. It could be that he's just visiting family?

Defoe is a good player of that there is no doubt, he will score goals for us that is also not in doubt.
Heaven forbid, but if Charlie were to get injured we would be up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle. With that in mind how much would Defoe and Premier league survival be worth?

Player flies into his home city just before Christmas shocker.

Or perhaps he's set to drop down a chimney in Sandbanks to swap a signed contract for a mince pie and a sherry.

The gamble /skill of being a manager of a football club. Charlie seems a pretty resilient player and his skill is not all about pace which is a blessing as less likely to damage ligaments, cartilage etc.

I agree with this. I think I'd prefer a loan though.

I could be reading too much into the story, but could it be that Defoe is smuggling in a radioactive dirty bomb that he intends to detonate during the Queen's Speech tomorrow, thus opening an inter-dimensional portal that allows the Venomous Hordes of Skullox to march in and claim the throne?

This is the most likely explanation but not sensationalist enough for the tabloids.

I still think he's a great striker and will be good at our level. But it depends on the money.

Are any of the Hordes of Skullox right backs or strikers because I've heard they're top, top lads?

Good grief. How many times does he have to turn us down for the chance of a quick buck for some of you to see the light. He went for the bucks. Now he wants the challenge. Provided we match the bucks he's getting in Toronto. Give me strength. I'm waiting for him to proclaim that his heart was always over here and no doubt he has a cousin twelve times removed who is a lifelong R. Sorry mate. Do you not read the papers? Just as we're about to be hit for a record fine, you come knocking on the door with the begging bowl out?

I'll bet he's not even paying his own air fare. If we do go for him we deserve all the flak we will inevitably get.

If he is serious he will be prepared to take a significant cut in his wages. If not, he can rot there as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps Norwich can persuade him that they offers them the future he craves. He can join his mate Gary Hooper.

Too expensive for us only Harry and his Monaco based dog will see any benefit from this deal.
