The scene's from the Pakistan school even after the bodies and blood have been cleaned up is disturbing. So many bullet holes and explosion marks. RIP the poor victims.

The question is whether Sampson was appointed simply for being a dude or because he was the best person for the job. I don't think it was simply because he was a guy, although there have been examples of that (Southampton, coincidentally, being one of them) but in this case I don't think it was. However, until women start being considered as candidates for jobs of men's teams, we cannot even be close to saying we have equality as clearly in men's football, jobs are decided (probably implicitly rather than explicitly) based on gender, and some would argue race too.

Personally I don't care what gender or race the Portsmouth manager is, they could even be transgender, as they as they do a good job.

It's preposterous that anyone would choose a manager of a woman's team purely on the basis of being male, unless they wanted to explore a different perspective to the management role in a positive spirit.

unavoidably male coaches have experience within the sport at a higher level given the propensity for ex professionals to move into management within their own field.

eventually we might see an aberration such as a female russell slade, but unless someone like hope powell, apparently the pinnacle of women in management, can work their way up from the bottom in men's football, there surely won't be a lot of opportunity.

Hang on... The man's last job was as manager of Bristol Academy WFC and by all accounts he did a great job.

The guy needs a slap, it shouldn't matter what sex or race a person is, it should be the best person for the job.

Surely not appointing him because he is a man is also discrimination? The best person for the job is the only way to truly have equality. Positive discrimination is discrimination against the other group. Sometimes these groups should think about what they are saying a bit more instead of just jumping in for a minority.

Out of interest, Bristol finished 2nd above the usual champions Arsenal last season under Sampson. He guided them from financial distress and losing their top players to that position.

The Liverpool manager probably should have had a shout of the job, taking them from rock bottom to champions, but the Liverpool manager is... Matt Beard, former manager of Chelsea Ladies.

i'm sure i'm boring you all, but the arsenal manager is a man called pedro, the birmingham manager is a man called David, the everton manager is Andy Spence, Lincoln are managed by Rick Passmoore, you have to go to second bottom and Chelsea to find a woman managing in the FA WSL and she's the only one from the 2013 season

Considering her record, and John Donoghue's record, it looks like she was sacked for not being male because there was no footballing justification for it at all. It wasn't even like sacking Adkins for Pochotteni or whatever his name is.

can't find much evidence of the chronology of his record, but he's managed a lot of reputable sides in women's football.

cancel that, the article i found said he competed against those sides. can't find much about him at all.

just as possible she was sacked because the club came under another's regime and that person has favourites. dodd and willo got sacked, and replaced with people the men above wanted.

You shouldn't be forced to hire a manager of any particular demographic (be that gender, race, sexuality etc.). However there are measures in place within other sports (i.e. the Rooney Rule) that help promote opportunities for those that are poorly represented within sport.

Surely a rule such as this could be put in place, guaranteeing that women get the chance to interview without preventing equal opportunities for all.

it's a shame that the WSL has so few women in management. that wants looking at, but choosing from that pool, the FA can't surely be criticised for picking a man to manage england.

This 100% - people confuse equality of opportunity with equality of results. There's all-women shortlists for Labour candidates in some areas, but there aren't quotas on male primary school teachers or male nurses!

Life can never be completely fair, because employers can just like the look of one candidate more than another. No one gets selected by a computer. An opportunity is all anyone can hope for. The world isn't changed overnight....things have moved so far in my lifetime. When I was considering careers, women needed A grades to get into medical school when men were only asked to get Bs and Cs, a friend of mine couldn't do marine biology because she wouldn't be allowed on a boat because women were unlucky!?...I didn't enter the scientific civil service because I would not be permitted to rise above a technician. And I'm 64, not 104. Give people a chance and eventually things change...certainly don't want a quota system.

When I got married my manager called me into his office and wanted to know if I was going to start a family. Can you imagine what would happen if someone said that to a woman these days! He never asked any of the men. Things do improve it just can be a slow process.
