The guy needs a slap, it shouldn't matter what sex or race a person is, it should be the best person for the job.

It's preposterous that anyone would choose a manager of a woman's team purely on the basis of being male, unless they wanted to explore a different perspective to the management role in a positive spirit. The question is whether Sampson was appointed simply for being a dude or because he was the best person for the job. I don't think it was simply because he was a guy, although there have been examples of that (Southampton, coincidentally, being one of them) but in this case I don't think it was. However, until women start being considered as candidates for jobs of men's teams, we cannot even be close to saying we have equality as clearly in men's football, jobs are decided (probably implicitly rather than explicitly) based on gender, and some would argue race too.
Personally I don't care what gender or race the Portsmouth manager is, they could even be transgender, as they as they do a good job.
Also Joey Barton is completely right in his twitter rant.

Considering her record, and John Donoghue's record, it looks like she was sacked for not being male because there was no footballing justification for it at all. It wasn't even like sacking Adkins for Pochotteni or whatever his name is.
This 100% - people confuse equality of opportunity with equality of results. There's all-women shortlists for Labour candidates in some areas, but there aren't quotas on male primary school teachers or male nurses!Surely not appointing him because he is a man is also discrimination? The best person for the job is the only way to truly have equality. Positive discrimination is discrimination against the other group. Sometimes these groups should think about what they are saying a bit more instead of just jumping in for a minority.
Life can never be completely fair, because employers can just like the look of one candidate more than another. No one gets selected by a computer. An opportunity is all anyone can hope for. The world isn't changed overnight....things have moved so far in my lifetime. When I was considering careers, women needed A grades to get into medical school when men were only asked to get Bs and Cs, a friend of mine couldn't do marine biology because she wouldn't be allowed on a boat because women were unlucky!?...I didn't enter the scientific civil service because I would not be permitted to rise above a technician. And I'm 64, not 104. Give people a chance and eventually things change...certainly don't want a quota system.
