Rooney?!?! Van 'gone missing for weeks' Persie!?!? Really?!!? Check Ballon D'or nominations and scoring records in the last year. Only one winner frankly.
If it's all about the here and now then Rooney and RVP win hands down! Both scored at the weekend. Costa was too busy kicking and elbowing ex-United defenders to trouble the opposition keeper. Altidore looked more threatening!
Ah, but the Ballon D'Or is a proven measure of the best striker. Like when Mickey Owen won it in 2001 it officially made him better than Henry, Raul, Ronaldo, Shevchenko and Totti. Fahkt.
Whether you're talking flavour of the week, month or year, the best striker in the PL must be the name? Surely? Step up Sergio Aguero!
Persie has looked shocking for the last season and a half. Rooney has always been an overrated oaf with his fat heavy touch and only padding his scoring record out with a bunch of pens. He must get around 10 a season on those alone. He isn't an out and out forward and he isn't a playmaker, he just piggy backs on the great players united have. Case in point he's never been the standout player for united (except for the 2009 season when you lost out to ancelotti). Tevez, Ronaldo, Persie in 2012 all outshined him and were the main men. Even Fergie came to realise this. Costa is far better the two above donkies
Because you say so, right? Or, more likely, you're just reading a script that some other halfwit wrote. Rooney will end up England and Manchester United's all time leading goals scorer in the not too distant future. He's that ****.
Rooney's historical record is great, but neither him nor Van Pervert can hold a candle to Costa in the present. If you genuinely would take either of them over Costa at the minute then you're on another planet mate.
And look who Rooney has scored most of them England goals against. The guy hasn't had a decent tournament in 10 years. Good at improving his record in throwaway qualifiers and friendlies though. I rate Rooney but to say he's a better striker than Costa at the moment is laughable. Flavour of the month, perhaps, but how far do we have to go back before it's just a given how good you are? Costa was amazing for AM last year, best number 9 in La Liga and best striker in P.L this year stat wise (though Aguero has been amazing and better IMO). RVP is not even on the radar. He's been comparatively gash post Fergie. Ballon Dor isn't cast iron proof, but better gauge than a random fan's opinion.
No not really. Costa has a had a good start to his season, that's all. I recall Demba Ba and Papisse Cisse both having major goals scoring spurts at Newcastle and then disappearing almost without trace. Michu of Swansea was touted as £25 million worth and now can't get a game. I will reserve judgement on Costa when he's had a season, not after a quarter of a season. If he carries on scoring at a similar rate to his start to the season then I'll agree he's a very good striker but if we're talking about 'in the present' literally then Costa is **** because on Saturday he had (yet) another of his anonymous games. Of which he has many. Rooney's record speaks for itself, he happened to score on Saturday. I would have him over Costa every single day of the week. He's younger too! As did van Persie, although I admit he is not in good form right now.
What, in world cup or euro qualifiers? Is this supposed to be a bad thing? If you're basing it on tournaments please explain the abortion that was Diego Costa at the last world cup.
Taking the whole of last season and so far in this one, Costa has scored more goals than RvP and Rooney combined mate - 47 in 66 appearances. The bloke's mustard
It is a good record. Scored a couple against you lot early in the season didn't he? I've not witnessed him being that good, seems to have a duff game when I see Chelsea. I've seen him be carthorse ****e, this no doubt clouds my judgement. If he carries on at a similar rate and gets 25-30 goals by season end I'll take it back. I would love to say Falcao is a better striker but I've also yet to witness that!
Not saying that i'm 100% right, but football is a game about opinions and thats just the opinion i have. Just like i do not think Gerrard ever was a great, as although he has a great record, i think he's too hollywood. Scholes was a far better player than Lamps and Gerrard but doesn't have the stats to back it up. Same applies to Rooney, yea he can pass really well at times and he's scored worldies but he's never been a great finisher (well at least until that 09 season). He used to be a very exciting player when he first joined Man U, but everytime i've watched him play the last 4 years, he doesn't have the touch, he doesn't have that dribbling ability, and for me isn't an outstanding player. He doesn't play on the shoulder of the last defender and i think the fact he was getting stick last year and was dropped by Fergie the year before for RVP says it all really. Dont' get me wrong, he would improve a lot of teams, but he is not the top player that Man United fan hold him in. I think because he's English and been the best of the a bad bunch of English strikers playing in a superior Man United team, he's been overhyped and made to look better than he is
I do kind of agree with that. ^ As to Costa the few times I saw him earlier in the season, he looked a real handful. As to whether he is as good as is being made out, I wouldn't put him anywhere near the likes of the true premiership greats.. Whether he ever will be I can't see it. For me aguero is the best in the league at the moment.
See, I think he's underrated if anything. It's a long, long time since he was being touted as potentially one of the worlds great players and his perceived failures for England, and the fact he's often help responsible for England being ****e, makes people think he's not that good when he is. His record shows that he is, it's pretty convincing and he's not scored all those goals and had that much influence against only **** opposition. He's consistently good. He has bad games, as do all players, but over ten or so seasons he's been consistently very good. I think he will ultimately break Charlton's record for both England and United and you just do not do that by being as poor as he's sometimes made out.
I understand what you mean, I think opposing fans view him in a harsh way but if anything I think he overrates himself. At times during his career his attitude has stank. He has been a bit of a mercenary too. But overall I don't think Rooney has ever reached the potential we thought he'd hit. That for me hasn't been down to talent but his attitude. As for beating charltons record I agree it does mean he can't be shot as to stay in the side for the period of time to do it is an achievement in itself, had we bought rvn or Andy Cole earlier in their careers they'd have probably beaten the record too. I think Rooney had the chance to be a worldie but spent it being petulant.
Costa had a poor world cup but was injured and playing in a team not set up for his strengths. First time in ages Spain actually picked a true number 9 and had no idea what to do with him. You brought up the England scoring record, I think it's pretty worthless in the modern era where people are getting 100 plus caps quite readily and there are loads of international fixtures. Is he the best striker if he gets the most goals. Not by a long shot. Shearer, Linekar, Greaves, Charlton all much better strikers than Rooney. Owen was better for England as well, pre injuries.
Rooney has gone into world cups injured and not been given any slack by our press and fans at all. As for the team not playing to his strengths well, it could be said that during his era Rooney has been in an extremely poor side. Which he has of course. Charlton aside, the other strikers you mention are flat out No. 9's. Which Rooney isn't. Or at least he's not that often played as such. This also applies to what Sweats said. If Rooney had been given the striker role without being played all over the pitch or as a second fiddle to someone else he would also have got to the record far quicker than he has. He's a victim of his own versatility in that sense. If he's played as the main striker he scores goals. An unarguable fact.
