Chappaz Like Dorset pointed out, it is not the rep points system which bothers people, but the fact that it allows people to leave anonymous slander on your personal message board. If they scrapped that facility, then I would be fine with it.
I see most want it scrapped. Which ever way it goes can at least common sense prevail by forcing the senders of what are usually obscene comments, to show there names rather than providing them with the ability to leave anonymous comments that there unaccountable for.
But exactly the same thing could be said of inbox messages. People could send abusive messages to each other (albeit not anonymously) and the solution could be "Just don't check your inbox". Anonymity on the internet is a VERY dangerous thing. Just look at what happened to ChatRoulette, give people the opportunity to be anonymous on webcam, and it just turns into a giant cock showing contest. With rep in its current state, it allows people to go completely over the top with personal attacks (That would warrant deletion or banning if they appeared in an inbox or a thread) with zero consequences. The worst part is that this is supposedly acceptable. Ive said it before, I can usually take a bit of **** from people, but the shamelessness of the Rep system, when it is abused to it's full potential, really does piss me off.
Again, just ignore them. If you don't look at the rep page then they may as well not exist. The only reason I can see for scrapping it is if it really bothers people, but for that to happen, people would have to eventually admit that these anonymous comments really do offend them. Personally, they don't bother me (I find some of them funny). The only thing which does bother me slightly is when people use it anonymously. I'm not offended by the comment though. It's more about someone being too much of a wimp to say it directly, so I just pity them more than anything else. It's a difficult one though I guess. What I would do is keep neg and pos rep anonymous, but make it so a comment can only be left if anonymity is removed. That would allow people to give honest negative rep if someone talks **** (some people DO deserve it) without being 'worried' of any backlash, and it would prevent titheads from spewing out the most crude things they can think of just because they're protected by anonymity. If it didn't change though, I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Yeah, exactly. In fact it's easier to avoid seeing offensive content in your inbox, because you can identify the username and then ignore it. Cocks are dangerous? Well, it depends whos cock you're talking about, I guess. What personal attacks? None of us give out enough personal information to warrant a personal attack. Has anyone actually received any personal messages which they feel is truly offensive? My view on the whole system might change if someone can actually show me what they're getting so worked up about.
It's all ****e, The mags have embraced the rep system, and we havn't. Don't give a flying **** what someone leaves, i get loads of grief. Agree to an extent with Chappaz, if it bothers you, don't look, it's not like points makes prizes or owt.
What I mean is people do ridiculous things that they would never think of doing were they identifiable. The fact there is a username or not shouldn't make a difference. The fact you can literally hurl abuse at people (And some of it is pretty nasty, tribal stuff) with zero consequences, is detestable, and shouldn't be a part of this forum. I know its supposed to be more relaxed moderation wise than the old 606 here, but that doesn't mean it has to be the complete extreme other end of it. The fact rep comments are one person, to another,, makes them incredibly personal. Imagine getting an unsigned letter filled with abuse about your family, calling you a complete **** etc, for no good reason whatsoever. That is the kind of experience neg rep is like. And obviously your reply will be "Well dont open the letter then". The point is you don't know whats going to be in it until you open it. Rep can be a good thing, even neg rep, it can help people gauge their own activity on the forum, and their own posting habits, but its the comment system that annoys me most, as Ive made clear already.
Chappaz I can see where you are coming from when you say keep it and stopping the ananymous comments. However, for me the whole concept of 'rep' just reminds me of Mutley doing almost anything to acquire more medals, and I find it a little bit childish. However, I would certainly settle for what you suggest, because for me it is the anonymous trash that is being sent which needs stopping.
Neg rep (well, neutral rep cos the culprit must have 0 rep power): See . It's no big deal. Well yeah, but my whole point is that this isn't really a big deal, is it? So some random stranger on the internet calls you a ****. I'd be more offended if someone cut a fart while they were standing with me in a small room. How bad really is it though? I've received a large amount of positive rep for some things I've posted, but occasionally I receive some neg rep because I'm an arsehole. Most of it is comment-free, but an occasional few decide to attempt an insult. Big whoop. I'd be a little more concerned if it was just constant abuse, but it's rare. I think there should be a setting which allows users to completely disable rep, so they can't give it out and they can't receive it. That would solve the problem. It ain't personal man. No one knows anything about anyone, and everyones a stranger, so how can it be an incredibly personal insult? Trolling and flaming is just a part of the internet. Getting a personal letter of abuse would be a little more concerning, although you probably don't think so. As for the 'well don't open it' idea, I agree with it. Letters are very different to the rep system, so if you don't want to see what's inside it, just don't look at the rep page. The only way that would be a problem is if you want to read the other comments, such as the positive ones. It could do with a change I suppose. I wouldn't be against removing the anonymity, or having a feature to disable rep altogether.
Humans always respond favourably to reward based systems, even if the reward happens to offer nothing more than a small ego boost. However, I don't think people make posts and comments only for the purpose of receiving rep. It's merely a small bonus. I hope they don't, anyway. If people enjoy it, it doesn't bother me in any way, so I say let them enjoy it, but simply remove anonymous comments so the use of the system to offend and threaten is diminished.
As i said, if people are happy with the rep system then let them get on with it; but remove the tool which allows for anonymous comments.. I think for once we are just about in agreement eh...
Yup. Nice change. Only thing is, I think the rep system is an addon installed through VBulletin, so if there isn't a setting to make these changes, then Mick would have to customise the software code, which can get a little tricky.
See the kind of things we would miss if the rep system wasn't there? The concept is a work of genius.
get rid of it the skunks are getting off on it. neg rep moves above a good blow job in newcastle i hate pleasing them
I may be wrong but is the rep system not an intrinsic tool of the vBulletin forum and as long as you use vBulletin for the forum you will have the rep tool there. Not really at Mick's discretion as to wether to have it on the forum or not
What he said, i think... Any computer boffins like to put that in some kind of language us mere mortals can understand. vBulletins???????
Vbulletin is the forum software this uses, I personally prefer IPB so have not got this installed anywhere, and cant be bothered to find a nulled version and install it just to check, but pretty sure there will be at least an On/Off switch and maybe anonymous comments on/off as well. Possibly, probably be a good idea to raise the issue with Mick when he pops his head up next time on General Chat Edit: I know that you have the option to edit the rep points levels at which you level up so by that logic it is entirely possible it could be removed
