When you consider the calibre of players we signed in the summer, that looks like good business to me.

Exactly Musty - Fernandez, Montero, Fabianski, Siggy and Gomis have improved the squad greatly. Paying an extra £1.5 million from last year to get these players is well worth it imo.

Guess, given that the time period was 1 October 2013 to 30 September 2014, the list could/should also include N'gog, Emnes and Barrow.

Additionally, I would presume that agents of players who have extended their contracts with us during that period would also be "entitled" to receive a fee. If so, the list would cover the re-signing of Ash, Routs, Leon etc.

Musty wrote earlier that it was up from £1.5m last year - that would suggest to me that the increase is £2.2m. Or did Musty mean it was up by £1.5m?

Either way, whilst a "huge" rise in percentage terms, we do now - on paper at least, have a stronger feel to the squad.

That's probably because you don't understand what they do. Players need agents because they need to be concentrating on their football, not on finding new teams, etc. This isn't fantasy football where managers just phone up and buy a player. Agents work hard to get players into clubs. I assume they work on a percentage, so these fees look like well under 10%. That's low when compared to industries like IT, healthcare, engineering, etc. Of course, football salaries are higher, so the figures are larger.

If you just worked on a 4-year contract that got the player £2.5 million a year, what would you charge? I bet you'd want a decent cut.

It's obvious you could't do the job so it just sounds like petty jealousy from you to say that agents are worthless. It's not money for nothing at all. It can be incredibly hard work over long period of time.

Do you think players have time to contact 50 clubs asking if their services are needed? That's the reality, not your fantasy football where Brendan phones Huw, offers £5 million for a player, club accepts and agent gets cut for no work. Agents will get lucky sometimes, but it's mostly hard work. Do you really think clubs would pay these fees if they weren't worth it?

plastic there are many players that dont deal with agents as they dont see the point of what they do. players have enough time off to organize their own life and if they were not earning obscene amounts of money then they would do it. If a player wants to use agents then that's their choice so they should pay not the club...

Fair point, but many agents can negotiate better than players can. If I was a player I'd get an agent. Also, the player salary, etc takes into account the agent fees. So a club could pay the player £9m and the agent £1m, or pay the player £10m and get the player to give £1m to the agent. It still costs the club £10m and that is usually how it works in practice.

Another point is that players just don't have the contacts that agents do. How would players contact the clubs? Players should concentrate on player. Slight;y different for long-term players maybe, but those that move every couple of years need an agent. There is also the commercial side to consider. I don't think players have the time to be contacting companies to get sponsorship deals.

I would rather do my own business than some agent, I would be able to get a better deal and i would not have to fork out money which is thousands of pounds to someone who is cashing in on rich people and making a fortune just using the phone or e-mails. ...good job if you can get it but the club should not pay for that...
