I watched this and tbh the fact we lost the ball immediately from the kick off just says it all - we looked toothless for the majority of the game - we need to be more adventurous away from home - 4-4-2 should have been the order of the day. Their back three must have thought, result - 1 man to pick up and wear out - the penalty was soft and arguably a cleverly won one - but we don't often look like a team that will get back into it once we go behind and today just re-inforced that. I believe it was rumoured we tried to sign Reuben Reid in the close season - what a difference a goal scorer would make. Ben Chorley has yet to convince me of his value although I thought that Jack in front of a back line showed promise for the future - Hollands looks tired at the moment and Atangana seems to have lost a bit of confidence. All in all we may have to re-appraise our aims this season. As always Ricky Holmes showed what I want from anyone in a Pompey shirt non-stop effort. PUP
Never come across a Southampton supporter yet who wasn't far up his own rear end. When they play somebody of note in their league the truth will out and I'll bet anything they won't make it to Europe by the end of the season. We played well today and especially in the first half. Not having the benefit of 20 different shots of the penalty decision and replays I have to say that from where I sit it looked a penalty and the Ref was pretty well positioned to make a judgement. To be fair when these go against any of us we always think they are soft decisions. Penalty or not I did think we were worth our win and your team did play a decent part in an entertaining game which could only show this horrible league in a decent light. Some sides can play football. Great turnout from you guys given it was on the box and all the Armed Forces stuff was well observed and due reverence given to it. Thanks for playing your part in that also. I go back a long way with Dockyard Derbies given I'm more than 21 now. Not only back to the late 50's early 60's and the crowds it had but I was also a matelot and it wasn't only the Fieldgun runs that were competative. I have to say I expected Pompey to bounce back out of this league last season and was surprised when you didn't. As we had a bit of money bother I guess once the money runs out no league is easy to get out of unless it's the wrong way. You are not the worst team I've seen this season by a long way and especially in the second half. Our defence has been immense this season so it is no disgrace not to score against it. Best of luck for the rest of the season except when the fixture is reversed of course.
Cheers sensiblegreeny. Most of the Saints fans that come on here are o.k. There are only a few that have "special needs" Plymouth thoroughly deserved the 3 points today. We weren't at the races at all. Good luck for the remainder of the season, and all being well we will give you a good game at Fratton Park.
Morning now down under and some consolation that we did not concede in the 2nd half (after I went to bed) Nigal Antangana drew very promising comments in the early games but since returning from injury seems to be a fringe/bench player. I note Eastney's comment that he now appears to lack confidence. Given the mid field problem perhaps some faith needs to be put into him. He may need a run of starts to recover his form and other options appear limited. How 'long term' is Fogden's injury?
Morning pompeydownunder ! Nigel Atangana is a big lad, very skillful usually, but seems to have lost his touch of late, like a few of our players. Last season he was playing in the Conference South with Havant & Waterlooville, so this is a big step up for him, but I'm sure he will come good. Wes Fogden is probably out for the season, and we certainly miss him. We will definitely miss injured James Dunne, as we don't appear to have another ball winner like him in the squad.
I was watching Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory this morning PompeyDownUnder, old Muscat still has a massive chip on his shoulder doesn't he!
A strange game to watch for me with plenty of friends being Exeter and Plymouth fans. Having friends cheer on Pompey was a bit weird but fortunately they were bantered out early on and the Plymouth boys had plenty to say and rightly so as there was only one side in this game. I really thought watching Pompey I would see more fireworks/passion but they were flat from the start to finish. It's going to be a hard long road if this showing is the normal level of play and performance for you boys. When Plymouth sat off second half Pompey started playing more ball on the ground football but had no cutting edge near the Plymouth box, in fact as soon as Plymouth players pressed the player on the ball they seemed to panic and didn't know what to do next. I will excuse Greeny for his Southampton comments because I know Red and White stripes are not appealing to Plymouth fans too. lol
I didn't see the game or any highlights but the BBC stats say we 58% possession, 14 shots (against their 16), 4 of which were on target. We also had more corners. What does this prove? Well, if I believe everything I have read about the match, and I do, then stats don't always tell the truth. You can enjoy good possession by passing the ball sideways to each other in your own half.
Hi Meowth, I am surprised you can watch the Aussie football in England. I also watched that match - unfortunately a goal less draw. Sydney vs Melbourne in any sport is a grudge match over here. Similar to North and South of England rivalry. How do you rate the standard of the Aussie national league ( A league) football? I would think probably comparable to league 2 in England but a slightly different style of football so difficult to compare. The standard here has improved of recent years but it is difficult to see it progressing much further since most promising players go to Europe.
I ended up watching the game (didn't realise it was on sky). good crowd for a league 2 game. as a general observation I never thought Portsmouth had a cutting edge and didn't move the ball particularly quickly to create space. Looks like you are primarily lacking vision and a playmaker in the centre mid. Area. hopefully you will bounce back to beat Aldershot to keep my third. Round dream of another cup tie at Fratyon alive.
Are you suggesting I'm wrong? That would be odd. It should be manifestly obvious to anyone that that was not a good team performance.
Not necessarily. I just found your post offensive. I'm allowed an opinion on my own site. You are only a visitor after all.
Timing, Pie. Timing! A bit of tact would help. Nobody likes to see their team playing s**t and then be reminded of it by their closest rivals. * * I'm speaking purely geographically, of course. In footballing terms, our meaningful local rivals would be the mighty Cherries, then Reading, Brighton, Bristol City, Swindon, Yeovil, Plymouth, Exeter and Portsmouth.
Disappointingly I'm not able to get to many games this year so have to listen to matches on PompeyPlayer and follow text updates/the NewsLive etc. From what I gather is that we have no real leaders in the team. Every game I hear that legend Alan Knight practically swearing that the back 4 don't talk to each other. I'd like to see Chorley dropped as team captain. Danny Hollands, who likes to get forward is being played out of position, and why AA played Miles Storey as a lone striker, well he alone knows. Too many players are out with long term injuries. Our away form is quite woeful, at least we're a bit better at home.
