Is this referring to Lassie? Pal was a boy doggie and Lassie was a girl.

It is indeed the first Lassie film - made in 1943 called 'Lassie come home'. The original Lassie was intended to be played by a female collie - but apparently she started losing hair during the shooting - so they replaced her with 'Pal' a male collie. Over to you Bloother.

Thanks Cologne, it was the clue wot got it. Bit short of inspiration, so I'll go for an open line. Which 20th Century classic opens with:
