Liverpool need Diego Costa says John Aldridge

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge admits he would love to see Diego Costa leave Chelsea for Anfield.

Costa, who earns a reported £150,000-a-week, was linked with a move to Liverpool during his spell with Atletico Madrid; however, a transfer failed to materialise, and Costa went on to establish his reputation as one of European football’s best strikers before sealing a move to Chelsea in the summer.

Aldridge believes Liverpool have missed out on a genuine top-class striker, and admits he would love to see the Brazil-born Spain international plying his trade at Anfield.

"Gone are the days when every player wanted to sign for Liverpool given the chance,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Chelsea and Arsenal are both regular Champions League competitors, can pay phenomenal wages – but most importantly for some players are based in the capital city.

"I don’t know if that’s why Diego Costa decided to join Chelsea rather than come to Liverpool when he had the chance a couple of years ago – but I would love to see him in a red shirt.”

Aldridge went on to explain the reasons why Costa is guaranteed to become a superstar at Stamford Bridge. The former Atletico star has scored a magnificent 10 goals in 12 appearances and has settled into his new surroundings quicker than even Jose Mourinho could have expected.

"I’m old fashioned when it comes to strikers and I love to see centre-forwards who are a real pain to play against, who give defenders hell all match and, of course, who can finish,” Aldridge added. "Costa will get his fair share of red cards I’m sure, but that will be outweighed by the number of matches he wins for Chelsea with his attitude, his aggression – and his goals.

"We need more players of his calibre at Anfield."

LIVERPOOL BID FOR COSTA IN 2013

Liverpool attempted to sign Costa from Atletico Madrid in August 2013, tabling a £21 million offer for the South American’s services. A transfer may well have happened had Atletico not sold Radamel Falcao to AS Monaco, but Atleti boss Diego Simeone opted to keep Costa at the Vicente Calderon and make him his first-choice centre-forward.

Costa went on to enjoy a remarkable season, scoring 36 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions, helping Atletico win their first La Liga title since 1996 in the process. His goals also helped Atletico reach the Champions League final, where they came agonisingly close to becoming European champions for the first time, before being denied in the dying seconds by local rivals Real Madrid.

LIVERPOOL MISSING SUAREZ

Costa bares similar attributes to Luis Suarez, who Liverpool have failed to replace. The Uruguay international, who was the Premier League’s top scorer last season, joined Barcelona in the summer - and Brendan Rodgers’ side have struggled ever since.

Liverpool took a calculated risk on Mario Balotelli, but it’s a gamble which has backfired so far. The Italy international has failed to score a single Premier League goal this season, despite having made seven appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

You are correct sir, he is right footed!

Then that makes it even better because he has a good left foot on him.

Liverpool are set to make a £25m bid for Chelsea's 24-year-old forward Andre Schurrle, but they face stiff competition from Tottenham.

Yes please. I'v been a big fan of this guy since Euro 2012.

I doubt Mourinho would let him move to a rival though.

Italian clubs Inter Milan and Juventus have joined Premier League sides Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham in showing an interest in West Brom's England U21 striker Saido Berahino, 21.

I feel I can confidently look at that list and think we have the strongest chance of signing him, though that may be tied with Arsenal.

We clearly like young British talent and he suits our player style well.

English players rarely move abroad (unfortunately).

Would love schurlle. Think he's a brilliant player. 25m might be a bit much but he's still young, has pace and can finish. Plays centrally or wide as well

New Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini is lining up a January move for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, 34.

Liverpool are ready to rival Arsenal for the signature of 19-year-old Lazio striker Keita Balde Diao.

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli, 24, will not be returning to former club Inter Milan in January after Roberto Mancini ruled out a move.

Italy related rumours.

Schurrle is a far better player than kuyt though and it's a crime he gets so little game time at Chelsea, better than Willian IMHO. and at 24 he's got plenty of potential in the locker.
Would love us to sign him. If Chelsea are stupid enough to let the likes of Sturridge and Mata go to rivals then I'm sure Schurrle may leave too, to continue their trend of giving Christmas presents in the January window.

Chelsea yes? Mourinho? no.

Mourinho is very smart. Mata has made no improvement to United because he doesnt fit the team and him and Rooney get in each others way. By allowing this move last season Mourinho did a very cheeky trick on United. It was very smart of him. Now Mata is mostly on the bench.

Moses was an obvious miss fit for us. His and our styles just didnt match. He got a small fee and a cut in the wage bill from his loan and in return Moses offered no threat to him.

Sturridge came to us before Mourinho's time but I dont think he would have allowed the move as it is obvious that Sturridge is ideal for our playing style. Schurrle is also ideal.

So would we be happy for him now to be transferred to Inter Milan? What about a premiership club like United or spurs?

This is going to sound strange but I'd write like to Gerard go to the Italian league. It would suit him IMO and possibly prolong his career too

Would certainly be interesting to see how he got on over there.

FFS...<doh>

Should have been "quite"

I'd not mind either if he'd go in a swap for Pogba <whistle>

No I just want to make a point on Shurrle

I don't think he is that good but Chelsea don't see us as real rivals that's just match day talk. If they are to fund some big money move next year they may well be happy to shift one or two so if we did bid at least I think the player would decide

However.... Right forward just like sterling, just like markovic.... Is there any planning at all at anfield?

Sterling and Markovic are better on the left, as is Lallana. I think our right forward side is weaker, much weaker.

Saying that, I think I'd rather sign a top middle man and more Sturridge to the right than sign Shurrle.
