Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has rejected speculation that he could leave St James' Park to join a Championship club.

The midfielder is in the last year of his Magpies deal and has been linked with a move away from the club this summer after contract discussions broke down.

Barton could see out his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer, or the club could attempt to sell him this summer to cash-in on him.

But the one-cap England international says he will not be joining a Championship side.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a reunion with former midfield partner and ex-Magpies boss Sam Allardyce at West Ham. Barton has moved to dismiss that speculation.

He wrote on Twitter: "Contract negotiations not re-opened. Back to NUFC on Tuesday, Happy days," Barton wrote on Twitter.

"Why would I drop down a league when I can more than hold my own in the Premiership?

"What benefit would it give me? None.

"I play this game to play against the best week in, week out."

Modric and Nasri were the best 2 players I played against in the league. I put Modric out in front as the best by quite some distance.......

.......Miles ahead of me in my opinion. Don't forget this is only a game of opinions......

And he was replying to loads of people. The general consensus from fans was that either he was correct, or Parker and Wilshere had outperformed him. He was really laying into Parker on some of the replies, saying "he's not in my league, in fact he's in the Championship!".

Agree with him about Parker mind. If we are only talking about centre mids then only Wilshere was better last season even with Barton being right wing.
If wingers are also included Ashley Young was probably better then him last year.
