I've done the match and I assuming it is correct then we have had 95 corners in our 12 league matches so far this season. I apologize if this is wrong but I don't remember us scoring a goal from a corner yet this season. In our first season under Hughton we were so deadly from set-pieces but last season we were really woeful (I might have even made a thread on very similar lines to this one last season). In fact I only really remember Leroy Fer scoring a header on a corner against Newcastle as the last time we scored from a corner (again apologies if this is incorrect).

So where are we going wrong? It can't be lack of hight to aim for. Michael Turner is 6'4 and a fine header of the ball and has played most games. For some of these Hoovield and Lafferty have also been on the pitch both of whom are also 6'4. Russ, Whittaker, Jerome, and Grabban are all 6'0 are slightly above so you'd think over 95 corners we would be able to score some.

I think the real problem has been the delivery. Since we shipped out Snodgrass and Pilkington there has been no replacement with anywhere near the quality of deadball delivery. Redmond seems to take set-pieces other than shooting free kicks and he isn't really a dead ball specialist. Elliott Bennett and Garrido are probably the only players we have who can deliver an accurate corner but neither is in the team.

So 95 corners thus far must be a league high yet we seem to offer very little threat from these. Imagine if we could get this right!

Ryan Bennett at home scored one, possibly against Hull?

Valid argument though, I think we had another thread on this recently. Delivery isn't good enough, and if it continues not to work I think we should be looking to take more short corners, and work a better opportunity.

Much like penalties I think we should have a corner taking competition, the best 4 should then take extra time to practice deliveries and routines. At least 2 will hopefully be in each matchday squad preferably on the pitch. I'm not saying Redmond isn't practicing extra, because I don't know, but perhaps if he and others want to really get to the top they may want to add in some extra practice over and above. Great athletes will stay a bit later, practice a little more and with our Corners boy do they need it!

    Bah!

I seem to remember one taken short then whipped in by Redmond this season but against who and who scored i couldn`t tell you.
Against Fulham they seemed happy to kick it behind as they knew we were no threat .

need to have an organised variable delivery to try and put pressure on the defense

I just don't expect us to score but then again I don't feel threaten when the opposition get corners too. I just think at the moment the defences have the upper hand.

When defending corners I would like us to leave at least two up to make the opposition worry about the break out and counter attack , we are often to slow to break when winning the ball back at a corner I just think if the opposition are worried that we may break they will put less bodies up and the ones that are there will be half thinking of the defensive duties ( to quote CH :) )

Redder's corners on Saturday were shocking, none of them came close to troubling their centre-halves - both of whom had superb games that I thought I should mention as nobody else appears to have done.
I can't believe we didn't let anyone else have a go, though I guess there weren't too many candidates, as has been mentioned by others.

If Josh starts tomorrow - and he really, really should, he's definitely ready - then I'd let him take some as he certainly knows how to get some decent 'whip on the ball' at least.

Failing that just play it short and keep possession.

I get so disappointed with corners as we are woeful at them. Delivery has improved slightly but nothing in the centre to finish them or a flick on to the back post. Might as well award a goal kick!!

Was Grabban's goal against the scum from a corner? And did one of NR's corners lead to an own goal in our favour?

Grabban's definitely came from a corner, but not the initial delivery. Defender cleared it, Tettey lobbed it back in and Grabban nodded home. Not sure about the OG.
