Shelvey is suspended this weekend against Stoke. Tom Carroll is expected to be his replacement. Carroll played a key role in England's U-21 matches this past week and their qualification for the U-21 finals.

Shelvey's performances so far this season have seen mixed reviews from people on this forum.

What are Carrol's chance of staking a claim and keeping Shelvey on the bench?

I see Carroll as a 'tidy', Allen-type player. He'll do a job for us imo and looks self assured on the ball. Different type of player to Shelvey who's more of a wildcard who can win or lose you a game in equal measure sometimes.

In my opinion, Monk only has Carroll here to fill in when necessary and for cup games maybe, and I suspect he'll take the view that Shelvey will step in when he returns. The only thing that might change his mind is if Carroll puts in a commanding performance and gets man of the match or something like that. Then he'll struggle to justify dropping him.

I think this may be the wrong game for him in my opinion. He is quite light weight and have a feeling that Stoke (Nzonzi, Adam) may well bully him out of the game. More suited to teams that like to play a bit and not just kick.

Time for Bony and Gomis up front to bully their back 4?

Can't see any other choice that Monk can make except for possibly drafting in Fulton who doesn't seem to be anywhere near the standard required at the moment. With Leon likely to be out for at least another month and possibly more injuries/suspensions in the coming weeks we are now struggling for choices because we failed to bring in the defensive midfielder that our manager and fans knew we needed to bolster our squad.

Spot on we have looked short in that area since the start of the season. Everyone was hoping it would be a quick return for britton to bolster the centre of midfield. That hasn't happened and now we look very short. Lets hope no more injuries or suspensions in that area.

I think we have three candidates for the deeper midfield roles: Carroll, Jazz, Fulton. I am not aware of any other candidates in the U-21 ranks.

I have presumed that this is where Carroll steps in. He has played at least 2 games in the last 8 and I have not heard of any injuries resulting from his England duties. If it's not Carroll then for me it should be Jazz with Ki playing the more forward role. I think I would be just as happy with Jazz as with Carroll.

Not sure about Jazz instead of Carroll , he'd probably be a bit more of a physical presence but footballing wise I think I'd like to see how Carroll can handle it , difficult either way and not an easy decision to make .

When you're a small player like Carroll you're used to playing against bigger players. He's a seasoned professional who, after years of playing football at a high level, will know how to use and position his body to evade challenges from physical players.

And besides, Stoke actually try and play a bit of football these days under Hughes. It's not like the ball is going to be in the air all game with Carroll contesting high balls. From what I've seen of Carroll so far he's very comfortable in possession and is a better prospect than Fulton. Looking forward to seeing how he gets on.

Quite right, unfortunately. He played some superb passes but got bumped out of contention in the Everton game.

On reflection (and TBF he's only had a few minutes for us) I'm not sure if this is a good move for Tom Carroll. I can't see him getting much game time especially when Leon comes back!

Shelvey has been anything but superb for us - hence the sharp intake of breath when Roy picked him for the England squad.

Correct. Shelvey hasn't been great yet this season but did a job last season. Bony was fabulous last season and is now starting to score again after a slow start.

Yet Bony gets it in the neck from our resident dweeb in his latest hate campaign and Shelvey has been "superb"? Come on. <doh>

What I don't understand is why Shelvey has not been playing for the England U-21. Did he throw a tantrum following his first senior cap and refused selection or was he just not selected. Perhaps Roy picked him now and sat him on the bench for two matches just to show him the level he needs to start playing at. Carroll has been playing and playing well in the U-21 setup.

Jazz hasn't really had a bad game when he's stepped in has he? Done exactly what has been asked of him, fair play.

shelvey has been superb so far for us and thats why he was chosen to be part of the england squad. fans with a bit of knowledge about football saw this clearly but fans who expect him to score every game really dont know much about the game.....And you can see this quite clearly with some of the comments....no shame in that...
Carroll is a player that will achieve great things and is very capable of slotting in to the side. he will do what jazz who is a tidy player is not as good as carroll who will make the big time in the next few seasons...

I have to say that is a terrific put-down, Dai <laugh> We can but hope that given enough time, people like Yankee, Dragonborn & Bob the Slob will accumulate sufficient football knowledge to stop making daft comments about Shelvey and eventually they will know a lot more about the game...:emoticon-0112-wonde But don't worry guys, there's no shame in not understanding what's going on down on the pitch....<laugh>

According to Stuart Pearce (-21 manager) Shelvey refused to play under 21s once he'd gained his full cap!
