We wont see him complete this season I reckon. And thats the minimum. Not entirely sure if he would be fit to drive for a while tbh.

@F1Grid have tweeted that he's out of surgery and breathing on his own. He's in the intensive care unit.

I think the next 24hrs will be crucial in knowing whether Jules will drive again or not. I don't see any point pushing him to drive again this season though. Marussia have got their place in the championship sewn up, and everyone knows what he's capable of so he doesn't need to impress for a seat.

Hakkinen went from life threatening to stable within 24hrs after his accident. Lets hope this will be a similar outcome.

    Agreed.

For reference, Massa (who still required significant surgery, physical therapy and psychological testing to be on the grid six months after his accident) was out of hospital within a week.

Horrible news about Bianchi but I hope he pulls through, the rumored improvements on his condition are very encouraging, lets hope they are true.

Well, the latest news is positive, thankfully. I don't know what else to say really; been feeling really **** about it all day and hoping to hear something good.

Another image has emerged, this time of Bianchi still in the car post-crash:

Obviously hard to say too much with any kind of certainty, but his helmet and the surrounding monocoque are a lot more intact than I was expecting.

Marussia driver Jules Bianchi is out of surgery and breathing on his own after suffering a severe head injury in a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Let us hope that he can continue his progress and recover. All the best Jules

Gotta keep hoping that the news stays so positive. I was really fearing the worst.

Though the car it pretty well beat up, it's not quite as bad as I'd anticipated giving the massive piece of equipment it smashed through. Hopefully he's going to make a full and swift recovery.

Eye-witness reports also suggest that a significant amount of bodywork was cut away to give the medics more access to Bianchi. That might well make pictures of the car look a lot worse than the damage the accident caused.

It looks like it slammed in to the rear end of the jcb and that wedge at the rear of that would make for a pretty sickening impact. Amazed it wasn't picked up on camera, unless they've chosen not to show it.

I would imagine they've not shown it. Mika Salo was driver steward and had a pretty good understanding of the accident from his interviews, so presumably he has seen footage. If Jules comes out of this in a reasonable state then perhaps some footage might surface. It seems like the type of accident where it's instantly obvious that it's damn serious, so FOM would have held the footage back when the race was on.

Hadn't really considered just how much of the accident Sutil saw really, but that photo really brings it home. Gobsmacked he was ok enough mentally to do media duties after that really.

Not sure I could have watched or want to know what was going on. It'd be hard to put that outta your head next time you sit in a car.

Gary Hartstein has blogged his speculation as to what the limited news about Bianchi's treatment might suggest.

I think the top part of his car was cut away for access tbh. I noticed his hans device (shoulder plate) thing was placed away from the car. Not sure it was from the incident or by the docs.

Radio Monte Carlo reporting Bianchi needs another operation to stop bleeding. He has been intubated & placed on ventilation

    That doesn't sound too positive!

I was expecting the worse after this morning though.
