maybe we have to admit that we have developed a losers mentality over the past decade or so..so much so that it is in our DNA.....that's why we cant keep anyone who has star quality...theres a few managers who I don't blame but got the axe....we expect to be up there yet we don't have enough fight, desire as individuals and therefore as a team to succeed..

everything is half arsed..second to the ball...not winning the 50/50's.....not being arrogant..not having any players that are going to rib the opposition....top teams have all that..plus some skill..we have shiny pink boots and tight tops...bullshit qualities once battle commences!!

No hunger,no desire from overpaid ****ers.

Is it not because of our position in the hierarchy? We are just off the top level, top 6 but not top 3. It means we can attract good players on their way up or on their way down but not when they are at the height of their powers. Bale on the way up, VDV on the way down, Berbatov on the way up and Davids on the way down.

It's a vicious circle that can only be broken by more money (new stadium/benfactor) developing our own talent or getting lucky as we did when we had Bale, VDV and Modric in the same team.

Our biggest problem is that our team seems to always be less than the sum of its parts. Normally you'd blame the manager, but it happens with all of them repeatedly

Edit - not necessarily in finishing position, like the last 2 seasons, but we played like crap

It's certainly that and we can blame the management changes for that IMO, we need to give somebody TIME but somebody who does not bore us all to death with crab like football. Poch is showing adabtability which is a start, but we are never going to see the best of any team without stability.

Other teams change their manager, admittedly we are one of the worst, but see results straight away (Everton, Swansea, Southampton, Palace etc).

    Why always us?

you're all saying that it's always been like this but have short memories - when we first got back into europe under jol and harry we had to send out some notably weak sides in europe because we simply didn't have the squad to be competitive in all competitions - in fact it wasn't so many years ago that we weren't getting anywhere near europe anyway. the idea that we can field 2 teams is very appealing.

cue for one of the glass nothing in it at all group to say something negative.....

Pochettino at least seems the kind of manager that can make a team more than the sum of it's parts, as long as the players buy into his system. If he is given time we may see that at Spurs.

Or because we are Spurs, we may well not. I can see it now: another highly-regarded young manager destroyed by Spurs the moment he walked in the door.

Saints fan here - I just want to point out that the bolded above is no longer true to Financial Fair Play - we have a billionaire owner, but wouldn't be allowed to pay £100,000's a week to a player as our income isn't enough (even if she wanted to) - it's why Nicola Cortese (our previous chairman) voted against it. Having said that, I don't think our Katirina Liebherr ever wanted to do that anyway. Incidentally probably one of the reasons they fell out & he's no longer chairman, and he was the main reason Poch came to Saints and probably would have stayed if Cortese was still chairman... :)

It is possible, City flouted the rules and got off with a fine (lol) and a reduction in CL squad. Pathetic. The only time it won't be possible is if UEFA grow some balls.

You do have great depth in your squad...this is very true, but it's a depth in squad of players at equally the same level. Which means you have a squad...of "squad players". There should be a difference in quality between your first team and your squad players, but right now if you played your 1st team AND your B team in the premier league, I reckon both would be competing with each other to finish about 7th. You seem to be buying poorer imitations of quality players you're unable to get.

    Yup.

Only Lloris stands out ahead of his 'reserve'

Eriksen on his worst day is better than his backup, Brazilian Jenas.

    He is proper class <ok>

I probably come across a little harsh, but it's more out of frustration, and I'm not even a Spurs fan. I have nothing against Spurs, but I've come to dislike the way the club is run, particularly Levy...since about the time Jol was ousted. No disrespect intended but I really think you fans are mugged off by him.

Sadly for us Spurs fans, when we fail to make the CL or win a trophy again, Hugo will most probably be off next summer, for £20m+

Go on then - how can I resist?

Which of our players has both the technical ability and proven effectiveness of previous "reserves" Nico Krancjar or Tom Huddlestone? I include all of our players in that question - not just the cup team. Eriksen - maaaybe, though he's still only had half an OK season with us and has done very little so far this term. Other than that? I'm struggling.

I wonder if anyone can be bothered to pull up some of our Europa teams from previous years to get a direct comparison.

I also think that once the novelty of their price tags has worn off in years to come we will look back and say "See? Our cup team now is so much better than what we had to put up with back in 2014 when we had Paulinho at right wing, Chiriches (Jesus! Remember him?!) at the back and Naughton at left back"

I can't believe Spurs (or Utd for that matter) didn't pick up Lescott on a free. Or Barry. Proven PL experience is invaluable. How good certain players are depends on how well they settle into the PL having played abroad in very different leagues. That takes time - better sometimes to buy when you know what you're getting.
