I bow to your knowledge of the dialect KKB Didnt there used to be a regular column about it in the Sentinel

You have got me with the KIND SLICE We left SOT in 72 to seek "fame and fortune" in London so memory of dialect has dimmed with time and sadly age but my mighty Potters memory is better going back to 1956 when I became a Stokie and the early 60's when Iplayed for Stoke youth with the great Denis Smith HAPPY DAYS

Originally comes from the question asked of coal miners as they were about to descend in the cage ( lift ) about whether any of them were carrying matches or lighters with them. They were then supposed to check their pockets etc. and if they were still carrying such items they had to hand them over.
