Scottish Independence imminent ?

If there is a Yes vote I'll become a foreigner, just as my parents would have been foreigners after they moved up to Scotland. I don't go a lot on that at all. However I do think a lot of the scaremongering has been OTT, and life for most people will go on more or less as before.

Sorry Billy I can't agree with this, yes for the next eighteen months life will go on as normal (with the exception of a number of firms moving from Scotland to England and a few moving the other way) but after March 2016 things will change both for Scotland and Britain.

Scotland will lose a large number of jobs in the banking sector, UK Government jobs will be repatriated, Naval shipbuilding/maintenance will move to either N Ireland or Portsmouth, there will be a large push to Fracking to reduce the reliance on Scotch oil...etc

When a marriage breaks up (unless it is a joint agreement) which is basically what this is... then the innocent party normally holds a bit of a grudge against the partitioning party.... after Scotch independence I can see a reluctance on behalf of the Inglish to buy anything emblazened with the saltire.

I can also see the loss of the Scotch Pro Europe votes hasening Britain's exit from the EU to be replaced with a nation led by a Salmon and a Bloater (or is it a Sturgeon?).

There would undoubtedly be some sort of free trade agreement between the new Britain and Scotland but with only 8% of the UK population I fail to see why 'the tail should wag the dog' and any such agreement will not be as advantageous to the Scotch as being within the Union. Once again I can see New Britain being outside the EU and the Scotch being within it.
 
Surely even the pro -Independence Scots cannot be proud of the way Salmond and the zealots are now behaving?

From JK Rowling to Mark Carney to Alan Hansen...not to mention the Prime Minister and the Queen, anyone who dares put their head above the parapet now gets drenched in bile 'n vitriol.

I had to laugh yesterday when little Alex was asked what he thought England/Scot relations would be like the day after Scots voted 'yes"

"Och...we will be England's bestest buddies" he smirked.

God preserve us from the day when the politicians decide how people get on with each other.
I'm pretty confident of a No vote anyway. The Nationalists' position on the currency is so weak it's laughable. When pressed by Alistair Darling as to his Plan B he said "No Plan B? We've got 3!"
Their position is hopeless, and when a party cannot defend its policy on an important issue, in my experience of politics it loses. I don't think the issue will go away though, the SNP will learn from its mistakes, possibly without Salmond as leader, and unlike a Yes vote, a No vote is not irreversible.

I hope the Scots stay. This whole thing of chopping countries and states up into smaller and smaller pieces because people can't stand the smallest of differences seems like pure de-evolution. Having said that, good democracy to let them choose, and if they so choose to go, off they ride into the sunset, and there is a small part of me that says the ones who want Independence on the back of stuff that happened in 1358 etc etc we are well rid of. A bit of history is a fine thing, but allowing yourselves to go through life being predjudiced on the back of that sort of thing is pathetic (I've personally never forgiven the Romans for the battle of Brentwood, but that's different) :-)
And fair play to FHB, the English may well be the only race you can be racist to legally, but we do an awfully good job of that with the French and Welsh.
I'm actually living in Cantalunya (it's the Catalan Day today so it's fiesta here) and they are looking enviously at the Scots, as the Spanish will absolutly NOT let them have a referéndum. There are all sorts of parallels here, uncluding the same historic bitterness (The Catalan National day is 9/11 and comemmorates a defeat in battle in 1714, three hundred years ago today) but the current Independence movement owes a lot of it's ímpetus to the Spanish governments loathing of Catalunya. If they backed down a tad, the Independence thing would wither on the vine, but there's no Gordon Brown figure to offer bribes here.
 
Other than the great John Hewie (who is sadly now battling dementia) what Scottish Internationals have played for us? I must be having some sort of block because I can't think of any?? David Campbell?

If the Jocks do achieve independence, then I must demand the return of the Scone Stone. Yes, I know it's a Scotch relic, but The Hammer (my historic hero) claimed it as a spoil of conquest, and so it must be repatriated to English soil (preferably my bedroom).

As for Scotland as a place: Melrose and Dumfriesshire will always hold special places in my heart, and I shall continue to make my yearly pilgrimages to the abbey and the Burns sites. And I sincerely hope the Scots protect their wonderfully unique identity and heritage.

However, if it all goes tits up, I shall be as smug as any self-respecting Englishman.

We lost ybabobmij, who went to CL as Sillybilly, which leaves only me, but as I'm used to being surrounded by the Inglish, living with 3 of the buggers, that's OK.
