Man Utd: Club identity broken after Danny Welbeck exit - Phelan

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan feels part of the club's identity has been broken with Danny Welbeck's departure to Arsenal.

The England striker, 23, came through United's famed youth system but joined the Gunners for £16m on deadline day.

United brought striker Radamel Falcao on a £6m loan deal from Monaco, their sixth signing of the transfer window.

"Danny Welbeck has been part of United's identity and that has been broken," Phelan told BBC Sport.

"What will happen in the future now, nobody knows but that thread has been broken now."

like i said its the biggest story of the day around the houses so this thread can be:

    1. laugh at arsenal

    2. hear the same old crap time and again from one or two lads bashing each other

    3. talk about the big story of they day and what it might mean.

the only way its bitter, obsessive or hypocritical is if trite stereotypical falsehoods are spouted constantly to explain why utd are broke, going downhill or buying the league <ok>

being interested in how they might line up is a reasonable topic of conversation for anyone wishing to talk football...

in fairness anyone who's done financial 101 knows cash is king and cash is bar better on hand than having a ,ower debt.

servicing utds formerly 700mil and now 300mil debt is OBVIOUSLY not an issue and if in 2 years time the financial report shows utd borrowed 100mil to get these players... who really cares?

Most every company'd books (non football) you'll see have soem level of debt on the books and cahs on hand is far better. Cash is king.

Exactly, we want to talk about football, certain #neutral people only want to talk about what we talk about <whistle>

Here's a Man Utd formation that doesn't abandon the 532, helping to minimise Van Gaal's embarrassment

This "end of story" trope really does make debate difficult. Are we discussing something or just trying to "win" an argument?

Whether or not they are good players wasn't under discussion and isn't really relevant to the point I was making.
So Utd's philosophy has changed, but that wasn't entirely inevitable and is not necessarily an improvement. There are plenty of managers who are adept at getting the best out of the players available to them and not having to resort to cheque-book tactics.
Admittedly, most of them are second-level types but Fergie showed that it can be done at the top.

The big spenders have seemingly inexhaustible supplies of cash and somehow get round the restrictions imposed on them (either that or the restrictions aren't strict enough). Utd certainly aren't poor, but their money is built on success, hence my point that it seems a desperate attempt to regain that success quickly in order to keep the funds coming in.
Assembling a team of galacticos, and maintaining it, is the realm of the rich man's plaything - not a well-run club that funds its own success. To a large extent Utd have kept up with them through raising money against the club, this can't be maintained if you're out of the running for long.
So, like I said- it's a massive gamble, let's see if it pays off.

Obviously another #obsessed #bitter who doesn't read posts before reponding

I was clarifying a point but already stated previously that Man Utd's debt and spending is irrelevant because they have no hope of European football in the near future <ok>

Good point. Man Utd needed at least one quality CB and an overhaul of the midfield. They didn't address either problem despite spending the most monies ever. End of story.

There does seem to be a lot of former 'loyal' red mancs lining up to stick the boot in on their former team. Keane, for example. However, I honestly don't think Scholes is one of them. He's always been dry, sarcastic and blunt to the point of rudeness at times. I think that's just who he is. Calls a spade a spade and not a 'dirt relocating implement'. I think he's okay as a pundit / commentator. Not as Good as Gary Neville, though.

I'm constantly bemused by the fascination with number-crunching on here.
It's not really my thing, but a pox on your percentages, I say.
11% of what? 31% of what.? If our debt was a tenner and now it's £13.10p it's inconsequential. We need real numbers.
    Give us the fakhts.
