Arrived at 6.30pm in Hornsea in the 80s. A bloke used to drive all around the riding dropping off 10 or so copies in different towns and villages.
It's on the 5 live World Football Phone-In Podcast for 30th August, 52 mins to 56 mins if anyone would like to listen to it. In summary if he isn't as distracted by the bright lights of Hull as much as he was by the bright lights of Palermo he'll be an exciting signing. Tim echoed what others have said, he's bloody quick.
It was never pink. Brian Taylor used to write the City report for years...Amazingly, by the time you got into city centre off the train from BP copies of the paper were already on sale with all the days football results.. Liverpool had a pink paper as did Birmingham..I doubt if they are produced today...
Tim Vickery is really knowledgeable. It's a shame the BBC didn't use him more in their TV coverage of the World Cup in replace of the likes of Shearer, Savage, etc. I think they only used him at the stadium for the semi final maybe?
There used to be a geezer in Co-op doorway (opposite Fletchers) on a Saturday night, too. Selling the Green Mail. Used to pass him when going into the Old Town for a bevvy.
Did you not watch many matches at the WC? They used him near enough for every game involving a South American team.
I try not to listen to 606 because of that numpty...Savage....He can't even speak English correctly....referring to 'them' players....'them' games etc.....when it should be: those players.....those games....Drives me mad...Ignorant Welsh to$$er
It was definitely green. A kind of mint green. An insipid pea green if you will. But undoubtedly green. The van came round at about 6.30 pm and a bundle was thrust into the waiting newsagent's hands. You could then read about everything you'd seen at Boothferry Park that afternoon. Within a couple of hours of it actually happening. I know in the modern, instant communication age this sounds awfully quaint and absurd but at the time it seemed miraculous. I miss the Green Mail.
I used to deliver the "Green" Sports Mail on North Hull Estate after doing my Daily Mail round. You got double the money for it.
TBF he has been over in Brasil for years , a very passionate and thoughtful football correspondent . Only for the WC in Brasil did we see his not so dismembered body. His music taste isnt too shabby either
I have also delivered the "Pink News" as part of a courier contract. The pub in Salisbury that I had to delver to was called the "Duke of York", I was banned from delivering there after I commented that it was a very apt name as he "Had ten thousand men"!
Yep, definitely green, I don't know when it was phased out but it doesn't seem like that many years ago that I can remember picking up a copy.
