Nobody would ever want to go back to the 2008-9 season, that surely was the lowest point in our history. But what was the highest? Although 1983-4 was our most successful in terms of achievement all-round, we still didn't actually win anything. So I suggest that the best time to be a Saints fan (so far) was 1976. Replicating that feeling wouldn't be impossible, not as impossible as getting into Europe via league position, anyway. If we made a concerted effort on the Cups this year, just imagine the effect on morale amongst the fans. And it doesn't have to be at the expense of fighting off relegation either, with an astute manager in charge.
As for Man U, it's great to see them struggling, but they'll do what they always do, throw money at the problem. They are the world's most valuable sports team, valued at $3.3 billion, and their home gates average over 75,000, so FFP isn't an issue for them. The likes of Southampton FC will never be able to compete with them in terms of brand-building, but we will always, especially this season, have a chance against them on the pitch. Anyone fancy meeting them in the FA Cup Final again?
