I never said it was a major or worthwhile trophy (the current holders are being humiliated by Everton) but it demonstrates the capacity to win a professional game of football which has eluded Van Gaal so far

I think van gaals won more trophies than liverpool since 1991.

Seriously i actually like van gaal, if given the time and resources, i think you will be up there as early as this season. He is a good manager, having said that, i think moyes would have had a much better season this time around as i dont believe he is a crap manager either. Up to utd standard - we will never know, a lot of your players attitude were as responsible for moyes' failure as much as ours were with hodgson, at least you did not buy poulsen

he'll get time and resources but unless he's got another 2/3 players coming in this window.... well you've bascially got to catch lfc for 4th cos no way are you getting arsenal, chelsea or city...
I do agree with waterdude that a lot of ferguson players just stuck the place out with attitude... but the reality is utd have a good keeper, not great cbs, not great CM but a good attack (2 if the others get sold)
so the issue now is thats not a good spine... and if you write LVG's utd line up i honestly don't think he's got more than 4 of his first team slots filled in his mind... It's taken lfc 2 full seasons to assemble a rodgers team so well see what utd do.
but to assume they can swan into 4th is being deluded. it'll be a huge effort from that squad to get 4th as it sheds dead wood and tries to attract players without throwing mad wages at them

back in the 90s (when you were 2 years old prob) he (and ajax structure) did a fabulous job making players and won the CL then seedorf f'd off and it went away. he also won the uefa cup with them
