Barret is clueless. He was tweeting on the morning that we signed Lukaku that Chelsea wouldn't take a penny less than £30m and it wasn't going to happen, how he's managed to become the main football writer at the Times is beyond me.

Edinson Cavani bid plotted by Liverpool as plan B option
Liverpool could inadvertently deal Manchester United a huge blow to their transfer plans, if they move for Edinson Cavani before the window closes.
According to Metro, citing German publication Bild, Brendan Rodgers has identified Cavani as the perfect plan B should his pursuit of Monaco forward Radamel Falcao not go to plan, and Paris Saint-Germain could well consider selling the Uruguayan in order to raise money for acquisitions of their own. Liverpool are yet to buy a natural goal scorer following the £75 million departure of Luis Suarez, and either man would likely fit the bill at Anfield.
However it’s Falcao who Rodgers seems to deem the more feasible option, particularly given the striker’s indifferent fortunes since joining Monaco last summer. His lethal form for Atletico Madrid has yet to be replicated at the Stade Louis II stadium, and word has it he’s open to a move to a more competitive European league in a bid to salvage his status as a world-class player.

At the moment though an agreement between Liverpool and Monaco looks unlikely, even if the Ligue 1 giants are willing to allow him to leave on a season-long loan. Reports yesterday confirmed that the Colombian hit-man wants £200,000-a-week in order to make the aforementioned Anfield switch, which would comfortably make him the highest earner on Merseyside.
Whether or not Rodgers is happy to add that sort of figure to the wage bill remains to be seen but, given Liverpool’s usual approach when it comes to matching the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea on the financial front, one can assume the Northern Irishman will turn to other targets.
Cavani and the United blow
Cue the speculation surrounding Cavani, who, like Falcao, has yet to live up to his name in France. With Laurent Blanc having made it abundantly clear last season that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the man he wants to place his faith in with regards to leading the line, Cavani was at times said to be unhappy, and could see a move to Liverpool as an opportunity to bag himself a big move whilst being guaranteed a starting berth.
As has already been discussed, were the Reds to make an offer for the 27-year-old - which would have to be in the region of £51 million given his valuation -, then it could potentially end Louis van Gaal’s hopes of signing his top target Angel di Maria. The Argentina winger is being sought by both United and PSG, though the latter don’t currently have the funds to push through any sort of deal.
The financial restraints in place thanks to the Financial Fair Play rules mean the reigning French champions have to fund any move for Di Maria through the sale of their current stock and, with Cavani worth over £50 million, selling him would give them that sort of cash.

Radamel Falcao has been promised by Florentino Perez that Real Madrid will move for him if and when they sell Angel di Maria, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
The Bernabeu president is apparently keen to see his vision come to life in the last two weeks of the transfer window. That vision involves Angel di Maria being sold for around £50 million and the Colombian striker arriving from Monaco.
Falcao waiting
According to Balague, who was speaking in a Twitter takeover for Bleacher Report, Falcao is waiting for Real Madrid to make a move. He has had enough of playing for Monaco after just one season at the club and is ready to return to Madrid, where he made a name for himself playing for Real's rivals Atletico.
Falcao has offers on the table from Liverpool but seems intent on holding them off. Brendan Rodgers is reportedly ready to make a move for the 28-year-old as he looks to replace Luis Suarez, but may have been put off by the player's £200,000-a-week wage demands.
Even if Rodgers agreed to pay the huge wages, it appears Falcao would only accept a move if it became apparent that Di Maria would fail to seal a move away from Madrid. That is where Manchester United come into play.
Manchester United repercussions
Di Maria has attracted only two suitors despite his availability being broadcast throughout the summer transfer window. Those clubs are PSG and Manchester United.
While the former has admitted they were pulling out of the deal due to financial restrictions, the latter remain firmly in the hunt. Louis van Gaal has demanded a world-class signing before the transfer window closes and Ed Woodward is busy putting together a £50 million transfer fee that Real Madrid will find hard to resist.
If completed, Di Maria would become the most expensive player in Manchester United's history and will equal the British transfer record set by Chelsea when they paid £50 million for Fernando Torres.
Stopping Liverpool
Manchester United do not need further influence in their pursuit of Di Maria – he is a quality player and will be the star name Manchester United fans have been craving. However, stopping arch-rivals Liverpool from signing Falcao is an added incentive not just on a rival level, but in footballing terms.
Falcao would give Liverpool's chances of making the top four a massive boost and that could come at the expense of Manchester United, who are looking to break into the top four themselves.

Balotelli is actually happening?!! If this is the only option we'd be better off sacrificing half a season and seeing what was available in January.
what's wrong with some kind of loan/option to buy? Which looks like what we're trying to do. Just send him back if he's not working out.

I think we'd be paying a pretty big loan fee upfront, plus covering his fat wages. Plus it would mean an end to any chance of signing a better player for that position. For the baggage that he comes with I also don't think he's particularly good.

Depends which source you read, I think. I think one source said that we initially wanted a loan, but Milan wanted to sell, so now we're looking at buying. Who knows what the truth is through?

Its like this; the hack is only as good as his informants. Barrett has some in into the melwood area, not sure what but it could be lots of things but whether he's got ins at chlsea being a northerner is a totally different matter..
