Actually Trev my old mate it is a tried and tested method of building. Many bridges for instance have holes built into them specifically to allow water through at flooding river levels., it's why harbour and construction cranes are built with struts instead of solid blocks. It isn't why the arches were built that way but it is how they and similar structures survive these kinds of things.
