In club terms and national side terms?

I know he's played for England, and was highly thought of a while ago, made an error of judgement in joining City, just how good really was he, and could be.

Any comparisons to other players? With the current crop of England team, surely an on form Rodwell will force his name into that squad again?

Gus has high hopes for him, is there any chance we could ever see Rodwell/Johnson both playing for the national team?

The Sunderland boss told the Echo: “We had an option to buy Jack because he’s been at Man City a couple of years without playing.

“He needs to play because we want him to be in the national team very soon.

“And for that, he needs to perform.”

It's all down to the individuals, we know that at their very best they are two very talented players . They need to perform week in week out at their highest level and England thing will take care of its self.

Trying to think of when the last time SAFC had 2 players in the England team? sure they have.

Rodwell could well get himself back into the England set-up with consistent performances. Don't see it for Johnson though as he lacks consistency, I think if it was going to happen then earlier this year when he was in form and other wingers were either out of form or injured was his golden chance. I'd say he's behind Walcott, Sterling, Lennon, Chamberlain, etc as out and out wingers and I suspect Woy would prefer to play altered formations or players out of position to accommodate the likes of Barkley over him. Very talented player but short of injuries I just don't see Johnson getting a look in.

I think anybody predicting how Rodwell will perform is just guesswork, he's not had sustained periods of pitch time at this level for a while now after a couple of injuries and not being selected for whatever reason. If his pre-City form is anything to go by he showed a lot of potential, he wasn't the finished article but was more than good enough to command a first team spot for Everton.

Both Rodwell and Johnson have to give Hodgson no option but to take notice. I still think Hodgson will pick as many Liverpool players as he can, but with Captain Slippy Dipper retiring that opens up one spot that Rodwell needs to set his sights on at least.

You missed the fact that he plays only for Sunderland now which is another big dent in getting an England call up. At the time of the February squad announcement he was by far the best English left footed winger in the league. He's a far better player than headless Lennon and Walcott is recovering from a serious injury. But they'll get in ahead of Johnson because of who they play for and regardless of form. SAFC is an England players graveyard

"Sunderland winger Adam Johnson reckons players at clubs outside the top eight in the Premier League have little chance of earning a place in the England team."

Then he must strive to get Sunderland in the top 8. I don't think he showed enough consistency or desire to earn his place last season but he did have a good spell and was overlooked, which I'd blame Bindipper Hodgson for.

What's moaning about it going to achieve? Did you ever hear David Beckham moaning once about being dropped by McLaren? Or Ashley Cole when he was left out? He said congrats to Baines and Shaw despite the fact he could run rings round the pair of them still. Owen was dropped long before he retired and never moaned.

It's one thing not being picked but moaning about it is just a bit ridiculous, he needs to grow up really.

I was raised in such a way that if something didn't go your way you get up and dust yourself off and go for it again, Johnson has been in a rich vein of form once in about 3 years and got overlooked for a friendly, a little more consistency and I'd understand his frustrations. This kind of outburst won't do him any favours, it's the kind of **** Joey Barton comes out with, leave it until you've retired.

I agree fully that good form should normally get an international call up. But you also have to balance that against the fact that a national manager has to have a good idea what his plans are going to be, and what players he has in mind, well before a certain players short term good form gets a chance to affect his decision making! Regarding Johnson, yes he showed a bit of form over 3 months which could have getting him in the squad, but I think a player needs to show it over at least 9 months before he can feel aggrieved for not getting picked! Good form over a long term period would give the England manager a chance to work out how Johnson could fit into the team! Maybe Johnson's not the sort of player he wanted in the squad, maybe he just did not fit into his plans or his style of football at that moment!!! No point in picking him if he would end up being a square peg in a round hole!

AJ is not going to be picked, it has nothing to do with who he is playing for, except that if he was more consistent he would not be playing for us.

Rodwell can only hope the ginger Pirlo picks up an injury, suspension or goes off to find himself in SE Asia to stand any chance after his 90mins master-class performance losing at home.
