Mike Ashley hits the news again after his company Sports Direct is named as one of the biggest companies to use Zero hour contracts with the people also banned from working elsewhere. (20,000 apparently ) This man really couldn't give a damn about anyone bar himself.

I.m sure I read somewhere that Zero hour staff don't qualify for bonus's and it's the government that is going to change the rules over these people to ensure fair play. How can it be fair to say to someone I can't guarantee any work but hey you ain't going to work anywhere else either.

With MA, there is a bit of a polarisation in how he treats staff it seems... some normal workers get 5 figure sums as bonuses at store level... some get nowt but a zero hours contract.
I see he's banned our coaches from getting 2 free match tickets each week too... Chronicle seem to be whipping up a storm on that one too...

Common practise in a lot of industries where you have to work to demand, I work in the hospitality industry and we have to do this for a lot of staff, I can't employ all my housekeeping staff on fixed hours as I would have to pay them for doing nothing in the quiet periods, same with food and beverage staff, the reality is that many of the people employed in this way as some of mine have been are on a level of benefits that means they work up to 16 hours a week without losing their benefits. This issue is nowhere as simple as it seems and it will have a big impact on the job market to take away this option for employers and for the employees who want this flexibility, yes there are some employers using this to take advantage but then government has made it more expensive to employ people year after year and it was a Labour government that introduced the zero hours contract.

To be honest I wouldn't wipe my arse with a Chronicle or Journal sports section these days even if the worlds supply of paper had run out bar their publication. Utter garbage and the standard of reporting has been shoddy for quite some time. I'm not sure I agree with barring them but it hasn't done as much harm as was expected. Two ways of looking at it. Its Ashley trying to control things a la North Korea or its Ashley not putting up with their **** any longer and saying they need to be on our team.

Until the zero hour contracts are illegal, then I just can't see a problem. I understand why people dislike them, and I also understand why some people running business prefer them. It comes down to the government and the legal system. The contracts say they have to dicuss it with their manager. The reality is they probably only get rejected for working elsewhere if it was going to interfere i.e. they were turning paggered and unable to give 100% or turning up late etc. Some trades are not as simple as coming in to an 8 hour shift with a steady workflow. They need flexibility in the workforce and hours to meet the peaks and troughs. Ashley is probably exploiting the system like a lot of businesses. That is the nature of trading, it is a bit unsavoury at times.

I expect most zero hour employees don't get bonuses. I'm not saying I am a fan of zero hour contracts.

The OP's suggestion was that the fact that MA uses zero hour contracts shows that he is a bad employer interested only in himself. My comment was just to balance that by noting that he did treat some of his employees much better than average.

Laws need to be reconsidered. Ashley would not go bust for offering his employees proper part time contracts, nor would his profits be damaged significantly.

It's almost as bad as wallmart in America. The c**ts made 15 billion last year, and didn't even give their employees a raise, despite the fact that some of them could barely afford to eat.

They even put up signs asking customers for donations so that their employees could afford to have a christmas dinner... f**ing greedy c**ts should just give them a raise so the poor c**ts can afford f**ing food!

But no, they don't care. All they care about is making billions and know that they can offer whatever crappy contract they want to their employees as most of them have very few or no other options.

Financial section in the Daily Mail also has an article on it saying he doesn't pay sick pay, holiday pay or bonus to any of these 20,000 people. Best terms go to a select few who work for him it seems.

Seriously Tash get a ****ing grip, it is not easy keeping a business going as it is with the cost burdens, yes some employers do abuse their employees and treat them badly but these contracts have a place in business operation, you don't like them fair enough but wait until you have to run a business before you spew your uninformed gush on the issue. How many people starve to death in this country really, our poverty is relative, you should travel the world and see real poverty and how many other countries treat their people before you sound off. This issue is a political football and is represented in a certain way by the vested interests, as I pointed out earlier it pisses me off that a lot of the noise about these contracts is being made by left wing socialist which is ironic cause the friend of the working man the Labour party introduced these contracts during their time in power. Used by sensible employers they allow you to have much more flexible staffing arrangements to meet the peaks and troughs of demand that you have in particular business sectors, if they are banned then I among many will have to change the way in which I react to the peaks and troughs which will undoubtably exclude some people from being able to work anymore. We have a whole raft of employment legislation, health and safety, COSHH, manual handling of loads, fire precautions and so on that provide a framework that has to be worked within to ensure that our employees have a quality work environment, it is an insult to all the people who take the risk to run buisness's in this country to liken them to 3rd world sweatshops, you should actually learn about these things before making such emotive and frankly ****e comparrisons.

Capitalism is the best system, in my opinion, but it isn't flawless, and we can have capitalists that make a lot of money, but legal rules which prevent capitalists from exploiting people to a certain degree.
