Apparently Pards has said that he's targeting 48 points as a sign of a good season.

Twitter Toon fans are filling their boots with a lighthearted #pardewtargets hash tag to have a bit of a laugh.

So what else do you think Pardew will target?

I think he may want to target HBA with a sniper rifle......

He may also want to target hanging onto 'the line' now we've finally found it after so long...

48 points would get us about 11th/12th place I reckon. It looks like we're settling for mid table mediocrity before the season even starts. Another couple of good signing would see us challenging for Europe. Over the last five season, we've made a profit of £45m throwing transfers. This doesn't include TV coverage which would be far in excess of that. Where's the ambition ffs?

I wish Ashley would sod off with his "balance sheet stability" I want a bit of life back in the club. He's choking us.

I agree with everything you've said there sombrero except the idea that Ashley is choking us. The one thing I will give him is that the club is actually pretty healthy - more so than most!

Shame there's no ambition whatsoever.

He wants to be careful with 'targets' because if he starts in a particularly **** manner then goes to the tried and tested 'Blame everything and anything but me' technique he will be ****ed. Let's pray that is the case.

Only business in the world that allows it's management team to set lower targets than the previous years.

The actual quote is below, I presume that if Pardew had said "My target is 70 points" he would have been derided as well, context as usual is everything, I note that most of the fan based mouthpieces are stating his target as 48 points flat, most managers at the start of the season outside the top 6/7 teams target 40 points as the base line.

“Well the average for this club over the last ten years in the Premiership is 48 points, and I think if we get that or anything above that it will be a good season for us. But at this point in the season, like all clubs, we dream of higher than that; we’ll have to see where we go…”

So the statement that is the object of derision is that doing better than normal will be a success but they are hoping to do much better than that.

I'll retract my statement - should have paid more attention. BTK and Fredd are correct - utterly ludicrous misinterpretation of a relatively sensible and reasonable statement.

We desperately need the season to start so we can judge Pardew on something relevant instead of this nonsense.

Where did he say this? 48 points would be a D+ for me. Sorry, but settling for 48 points is ****. We should be aiming for 55 at least IMO. We're well capable.

Dude, relax. He has said his minimum target for a good season is to beat our average points haul, which is perfectly reasonable, but that he wants higher than that.

This whole target of points is ridiculous anyway. Every manager in every league wants to win every game. Therefore all managers in the PL are targeting 114 points. Of course that's not reasonable so why pick an arbitrary figure?

I actually agree with the Twitter lads for once here.....

He's using statistics to manage expectation in this statement...

The 10 years he includes as his base (ignoring the championship year) are:

56
44
58
43
43
34
46
65
41
49 (last year)

Average 47.8.

If he looked at his tenure (arriving in Dec 2010) it's actually an average of 50.25 forgetting again the championship season (actually proving that he's take the club forward in terms of points accumulation).

I look at it as a case of... as long as I see improvement year on year it's a SMART target.

He says of 48 points 'if we get that or anything above that'.... no Alan.... we have to aim higher.... forget 48 points (anything above that is approaching decent though).

We should have two clear, simple and intertwined goals next year.... to finish higher and with more points than last year... nice and simple..... this should be the same of every year IMHO.

One final stat (seeing as I'm in the mood to prove how they can be manipulated).... the average points over the past three seasons has actually been 52 points... not bad IMHO..... so recent performances suggest 50+ is the bare minimum we should be looking at under Pardew, especially now as he has a meatier squad of players to pick from).

Appreciate his dream sentiment too but a club like ours should surely be stating that we expect to be top 10 or getting 50+ points year in year out.... not dreaming of it.

Dreaming is banging on about Europe, a cup or a top 6 finish... that's dreaming.....

I'm with Roland.

I can't wait for the season to start so that we actually have something to talk about and aren't forced to hyper analyse banalities to fill our days.

The pitch forks need an outing every week or so.

I do wonder if the fan sentiment is similar, though. Even with months passed since the last season died such a spectacular and gruesome death, are the natives still restless. Regardless of it being Man City, will the burning effigies be out in force if we don't do particularly well in the first game? Is Pardew starting the season with a seething undercurrent of discontent? Hard to see him getting to November as Toon boss if this is the case.

Thoughts?

I think the fans have lost the will to seethe

I think he undoubtedly is and probably will be until his time is up. The only way that could change is if we won something. Given he is under instruction to treat the cups as a bit of a laugh, I'm not sure I see a trophy on the horizon! Many fans just hate him and look for any opportunity to work an angle to say something negative about him. Personally I'd have changed him at the end of last season for something a bit more progressive. I just don't buy into the whole hysteria at every comment.

He'll get to November and beyond because his job is pretty safe for me. Mike likes him, he also makes a fine patsy (that was patsy not pasty). He is quite happy to toe the party line and take the flack when we understaff etc. I think while everyone was thinking his stock fell in the 2nd half of last season, I think Ashley will have been quite happy how he managed his way through the mess Ashley largely created. The stick Ashley took was minimal. If KK had been in charge, can you imagine how that balance would have changed?

I think we will see the usual hysteria if we lose to Man C. I expect a heavy defeat, they have a fantastic squad and manager.

We support the team not Pardew.
He's embarrassed our club time and time again and is not the man to manage NUFC.
I'll be doing what I always do, back the team 100%.
Pardew should simply keep his mouth shut if he is going to spout crap like that.

City are a great team. We will lose and probably comfortably so I'm not going to judge after the first game. 8-10 games at least. If things are going badly Pardew won't have any excuses anymore in regard to the team as Ashley has spent money ( allbeit alot of it would have come from the Cabaye/Debuchy deals) and the squad is, on paper at least, much stronger than last season. If we are struggling his head has to be on block and this time brutally severed from his body and launched into an enraged, pitch fork wielding mob to kick around in their blood lust. His body then quartered and sent to the four corners of the kingdom as a reminder to other bottom feeding managers to stop being s**t.

It is the only fair, sensible and practical solution to the problem.
