Hi lads......

What do you guys think of the standout performer in our preseason matches so far? Left winger Rolando Aarons.

Is he going to be the next Gabriel Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Wayne Routledge, Fabrice Pancrate??????

Apparently a host of second tier clubs are after him.

How should we handle this talent? Should we be giving him substitute appearances to try as an impact sub? Or do we loan him out straight?

The jury is obviously still out on him, but how has he really looked so far? I've only taken a look at 1 of the preseason matches and watched some highlights of the Schalke game where he had a great game, so I'm deferring to you all on him..

Comments please

To me, he seems as if he is all ready to be challenging the first team. However, 5 minutes here and there will not help. He needs either full games (at a championship side) or more of a role here (be it 20/30 minutes but on a regualar basis)

I'd give him a season as a sub at ours..... then loan him out to a PL club who will guarantee him a start.... then he should have enough experience.
He's way better than Obertan IMHO.

I think he's earned a start against City given Tiote and De Jong will be out.

I'd go 4-4-1-1 with the following:

GK - Krul
RB - Janmaat
CB - Colo
CB - Willo
LB - Haidara
RM - Gouffran
CM - Sissoko
CM - Colback
LM - Aarons
AM - Cabella
CF - Rivierre

Sissoko needs to start in the middle ahead of Anita for me in this game, mainly because Toure always bullies our midfield so we need a physical presence in the middle of the park.

Anita is the unlucky one if we go with the above but for me Aarons deserves his start.

Depending on how we play this is good. Natural footers, so playing wingers instead of "inside forwards" to stretch the play is probably good. City are probably more expecting that and I think even Sunderland showed that just having correct-footed wide players can work. Riviere seems confident enough to play up front and in Cabella we'll have a centralised, left footed attacking midfielder who's comfortable actually suppporting the front man.

Big shout on Aarons, but why not? The lads are used to him playing and he's done nothing to say "don't play me". If you're good enough, you're old enough. I also think the City game is a "gimme" - lose and its' expected so just say Aarons does something, he's a hero. If he doesn't, nobody holds it against him.

He has proved he's good enough by his recent form - play the lad from the start and build his confidence. And I would keep him, dont loan him out, we need all the good players ourselves. If his form continues he's going to get game time..

^This. Sick of hearing about promising youngsters at the club and then never seeing them given a chance with the first team and farmed out to lower league. I don't necessarily agree with the thought that if you're crap in the championship, you can't be good in the PL. They are totally different leagues in my opinion and require different tactics with a group of players with different attributes - quite how pardew made us look so good is way ****ing beyond me and blow this theory out of the water I guess.

I'd much rather see him given a sub role, but a proper one....not being introduced with 3 ****ing minutes left and then halfway through the season deciding he's ****e and farming him out to ****ing Boro or that.

Ha Christ. Was it Clark who tried to make a winger who weighs about 8 stone a full back?

For once take off the "Pardew is to blame for everything" glasses.

Ferguson made good progress under Pardew. His progress went into reverse under Clarke.

I could, or you could get off Pardews bell and see reality. Oh and you're bulling yet again. Is it a personal trait? He made progress under Hughton, as a winger. Then Pardew comes in ... you know the rest

Have to agree with the fact that Fergie started off looking the real deal... then had a dip.... then went to Brum and suffered being played out of position.
Personally instead of trying to bulk the lad up as Pards did... I'd simply leave him as he was and got him to work on his pace and tekkers. Now Pards may have had the right idea about giving him more presence but for a pacey winger I think that can hamper the natural game.

I don't think cards will start Aaron's over anita this weekend due to the magnitude of the opponent. But if he did, there's a big jump in pace for that counter attack. Now Aaron's, gouff, sissoko, riviere, and cabella all bursting forward. Tbh, I think Aaron's is the fastest player we've got. He doesn't look that fast and always looks like he is going to get dispossessed but he always seems to burn the defender.

If Arsenal are paying daft money like that £19m fee for Calumn Chambers (who played only 21 games in total in the PL before the move) then I can see Fat Mike salivating about the prospect of getting Aarons a few games under his belt before flogging him for £20m+.

Roland Aarons looks a very good player in the making and so far has looked good enough to pla., Pacey, can cross and does battle. I say keep him as part of our match day squad and use him as an impact sub when defenders are tiring

While this is generally speaking a question of opinions, on this occasion you're wrong.

Ferguson made a total of 2 League Cup appearances under Hughton. His Premiership debut and all subsequent appearances were under Pardew. Whatever progress he made (and it was a fair bit) was under Pardew. He then went to Birmingham where, for whatever reason, he found himself unable to make the bench.

As for my opinion on Pardew, I think you could trawl the whole of my posts and not (except maybe in the heady days when we were flirting with the Champions League) find anything saying that he's much above average. Currently I'd rate him just about exactly average: if you pulled a name out of a hat containing everyone who has managed a Prem team in the last 10 years, you'd have a 50 - 50 chance of finding someone better. I just dislike BRS/Shola style obsessive vilification.
