We are also hearing that Bristol City have made a bid for Rotherham United striker Kieran Agard. Agard recently turned down the offer of a new deal New York Stadium and Bristol City are hoping to lure him to Ashton Gate.

Central striker is the one position where we really do not have enough options available to SC.
JET is not an out and out striker which leaves Sam and Wilbraham. So what happens if Sam gets injured? We go for another loanee who may or may not fit in, may or may not score goals.
The only other one in the first team squad who could be thought of as a striker is Wes Burns, but as yet very unproven in a main striking role.
So if there is any truth that we are making an enquiry about Agard, let's not all jump to the conclusion that Sam is on his way. It could be SC and SL are doing their very best to ensure that we finish first or second!

    Well said Cidered

It says we have been looking at him for a while, so there is obviously something about the player that Cotterill likes (and maybe even Lansdown as well by that report).

I see this as another positive

Unless Baldock is going, where will he fit in? If you ask me apart from the goalkeeper position I think every position is pretty much nailed down. He's a great player, one of the best last season but unless Baldocks going or JET is then whats the point buying him?

Plus Leeds have been after him since he handed in a transfer request, he could easily get into most championship teams so it won't happen

It's not about building a team these days. It is about getting together a squad to perform over fifty games per season and cope with injuries, suspensions, loss of form and to provide serious competition to every member of the squad and every position in the side.
So if our interest in Agard is true, and if we do sign him, it will not be to fill one predetermined place in the starting line up. We are beginning to see a real sense of purpose in the recruitment of players, not the haphazard way it has been done in the past. Keith Burt's influence?

Cotterill means business. Had Rotherham not gone up I would have hoped we would have made a move for Agard but they did...... Leeds are supposedly interested and they seem like the much more likely option for him. He wouldn't have to move and he still gets championship football and probably on a much higher wage than what we or Rotherham could offer, but there is no harm in putting in a bid. Who knows we could pull it off...

Stockhausen hasn't categorically denied that this deal won't happen, and when it's a no go he normally says it straight away

'I see this as another positive'

    Sorry guys I don't.

How many bloody strikers can we play ?
Come October Cotterill will wish he spent more time strengthening our defence.
    Unless of course Baldock's leaving.

True.... I reckon we have put a bid in, but how often to clubs accept 1st bids... This guy would no doubt cost us at least 1 million.

Sorry Redprint but unless I'm missing something (And I'm normally am) we only have two out and out strikers in Baldock and Wilbraham, (I wouldn't call JET or Burns an out and out striker) whereas we have Little, Williams, Flint, El-Abd, Osborne, Cunningham and Ayling with Bryan at a push who can all play in defence!

Some advice, Loathsneyd, from an old timer. Don't bang your head against a brick wall. It's not worth the effort.:emoticon-0100-smile

I mentioned this rumour quite a while ago

If this is truly squad building and it comes off, and SB stays, then our competitors should be sitting up and taking serious notice of our intentions this season.

What a contrast to the rubbish we assembled last Summer under the financial constraints...it nearly cost us our place in the 3rd division !!

He's also a winger as well, so could be used in that position with Baldock and JET.

Redprint why do you want more defenders?

IF we do manage to somehow sign Agard we could potentially have a front 4 of

    Baldock
    Freeman JET Agard
    cm/dm .... cm/dm
    lb ..... cb ... cb ..... rb

'Redprint why do you want more defenders?'

I feel our central defenders are ordinary - Osbourne apart.
Defending is not just about the back 4 but nevertheless we're seriously in need of a leader at the back.

You may be right but we do have defenders on the wage bill so until we ship them out then we have the cover. If we get injuries or suspensions upfront there is a lack of cover so I think getting a striker (and a goalkeeper) in are a greater priority in my humble opinion:angel:.

If Lansdown's investment and the quality of our purchases may be seen as a declaration of intent, then that in itself could be enough of an incentive to attract a young hotshot such as Agard to the club
