The annoying thing for me is that Chambers is capable of being a top centre back IMO. Given that we really need some reinforcements in that position it's harder to take that we're letting him go.

Not how it works. The PFA would be all over it, players have too much power and it is a fact. Contracts mean nothing at all, I blame Bosman in a way.
Yeah, that's how it work. Player see it's in their best interest of their careers to continue playing for the club and wait for another opportunity. Bale, Modrić, Suarez - all wanted to leave, but were kept regardless of their wishes. At least for another year.

If the club warned other clubs off, they would be in trouble with the EPL if they spoke to the player. The PFA would be wary of making contracts unenforceable...that could work both ways. I wouldn't, however, be amazed to see a major court case one day...after all, it is virtual slavery to have to exist on only 40K/wk.

Players will leave eventually. Before they left, they stayed another year, contrary to their wishes, thus ensuring their club has a strong and competitive squad for the season, and adequate time to prepare for next season. It not important that they left eventually. It's important that the club exercised it's power at the time being and kept them. They are also examples of players which haven't left at all, like Baines, and i'm sure there are more examples. Just because our present board is unable to keep hold of anyone doesn't mean it's a general truth.

Really? Apart from you and me I don't think many people have seen him as a solution to our centre back problem. I look at his size and style and think he might be worth trying there but never heard SFC announcing that is part of his future.
I don't think some people get that. Players only stay a extra year or so if it benefits them. Just because Baines changed his mind doesn't mean anything, Baines is a rarity in the modern game.
If a player wants to leave and doesn't change his mind after talks he will go.
If the player sulked and moaned and didn't play the PFA would in and complaining the club is ruining the players mental health.
Insert a buyout clause and offer a better contract. So for starters we have two things a club can do to prevent wantaway players leaving. Let's find more of them, I'm not sure these two will be suffice to persuade Beefy that clubs can actually do something to keep players.
For a season, yes. I'm not advocating we should keep all our player as long as they draw breath. After already selling Luke, Rickie and Adam, we should pull the plug on the other outgoing deals and keep Lovren, Schneiderlin, Chambers and others one more season at least, so that the transition can be smoother. Otherwise, with so vast array of changes in the personnel, we're taking a huge gamble which can backfire on us.
