Yes - something like Lawrie asked KK to bring back a special lamp from Hamburg but when KK forgot, Lawrie Mac jokingly said he had to sign for Saints - and to Big Mac's surprise Super KK said "go on then"....?
Yeah, but it starts with Lawrie ringing Kevin about an exterior lamp because Lawrie had been on holiday in Germany, seen a lamp he'd liked, came back to GB and couldn't find one exactly the same. So he rang Keegan and described it. Keegan recognised what Lawrie was talking about, from a catalogue. This took a couple of calls and in the meantime Lawrie asked about what Kevin was doing regarding his contract. Keegan said that he'd like to come back to England, at some point, so Lawrie mentioned that he'd like to sign him for Saints, and that he had Micky, Bally, and the other Stars, etc.., all ambitious still. Then Lawrie dropped the subject and let the offer fester in Keegan's mind. KK has subsequently said he loved the idea of a smaller club being successful, and playing the big glamour teams at The Dell, because it was a tight little ground, where the crowd were so close and where you could really get at the opposition. And that was essentially it. Lawrie was such a fabulous salesman that he sowed the seed in Kevin's mind and let it work its magic. He signed KK for next to nothing, and every time KK went over to visit Lawrie, in later years, there would be that exterior door lamp illuminating the porch. And on the subject of disagreement with Lawrie [which the article says happened]. It wasn't that KK disagreed with Lawrie. It was that the Board at the time had said that no extra money was to be spent to get in a striker replacement for Steve Moran when he got his bad back injury [no transfer window]. Subsequently, Saints slipped from 1st to 7th, and KK realised that the club weren't ambitious enough to fight for the title and he became disillusioned. Lawrie realised the same a few years later, so he left as well. Let's hope we're not in a similar situation now.
The fee I believe was 400k, which was not negotiated but set in KK's contract upon signing for Hamburg. It was for the same reason, that he cost Newcastle 100k I believe from us.
Used to have a fairly extensive Youtube video archive, but now I've reduced it to almost nothing. Anyway, I uploaded this old video. Sorry about the quality, but you should get the message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIlrLnGEnrY
When Lawrie tells the story at after dinners he said that Keegan forgot to bring the lamp over and therefore felt compelled to sign so the lamp was never at his home.
