Whatever happened to just enjoying supporting a team and watching them every week? These days it seems like some fans just seem to want the bragging rights at work or on the message boards and little else matters.

I admire your sensible and very rational approach to supporting Spurs , I wish in some ways I could change my spots . Sadly for me, my sporting ethics in general is "play to win " .The Corinthian spirit has sadly left the building in my case. Prudence ? well I feel at times we haven't seized the moment , which has lead to our implosions and constant failure's at the last hurdle.
Being vain and a little shallow I would like to occasionally brag just a little, surly this is only human. The repetitive defence of Spurs as the nearly men, no chancers,
no ambition, mad micro chairman , show me your cups, Sainbury's 2 for 1, couldn't give a toss owner gets very tiring over a decade of so little.
In my madness, silliness , stupidity , I would want to see Spurs as the demi-God Achilles . Glory and honour , at least to reach great heights even if it came crashing down.
At least I would be able to taste the sweet Arcadian nectar if only once, so be it.

Fair enough, I just feel when it comes to supporting a club some people take the results very seriously but take the money involved very lightly, whilst I'm the opposite. As much as I'd love us to be the ones bucking the trend and beating the monopoly of the richest in the Premier League I just don't see how it's possible to do it in anything other than the short term. If the Dortmunds, Atletico Madrids and others can only challenge briefly before their best players all get picked off then it would be the same for us, in my opinion. So long as we play some good football and see some good players in a Spurs shirt then I'll be happy with the future even if we're still just finishing outside the top 4.

I think it's fair to conclude that anyone supporting Spurs isn't doing it for the glory.
 
I think if, like me, you were there and actually remember the glory days, it's only natural to want to see them again. But, as YV says, realistically, it ain't liable to happen. But can I have just one more season like 60-61 before I go...please!!..

Disagree 'even failure will have in it an echo of glory' do not forget. :smile: United, Chelsea, City winning something is status quo, it's expected because of their financial muscle. If Spurs make the CL despite them it will have glory. They can't have glory AND the financial clout. Same as Real Madrid or Barca win something, oh big deal, so they should. Athletico Madrid, or Seville winning = glory, and so on.

I like having a moral superiority over Gooners (as an example). When I have some Gooner kiddie in my face giving it large with his usual inane bragging, I always manage a sneering comment that cuts to the quick the little brat's arrogance, especially if the scroat is from Enfield or Chingford, or those kinds of places.

"Remind me, " I will sneer, "when exactly did you start supporting Arsenal?"
"When I saw them winning things and using their financial clout to bribe players to stay at their club," the scroat will typically inform me.
"So, you are nothing more than a cheap glory-hunter?" I will often say, with deadly precision.

Hey I know! Peter Risdale isn't doing much these days. Lets get him as our chairman. He put football success over money and spent loads of it! And Leeds Utd are really flying because of it! Aren't they?

I get where you are coming from in one respect - the lack of trophies. We ought to be able to win cups at least as often was we used to as some of the moneyed clubs don't take the League Cup seriously and the Europa should be winnable too. I think the club feels that top 4 is a high priority so we don't go full belt for the other trophies. I happen to think that is a mistake because the benefits from creating a winning mentality outweigh the risks.
