I know this sounds bizarre, but I suspect, in a tin-hatted way, that when it rains it somehow effects my Virgin connection. No logic in that at all, but human beings instinctively look for patterns, even if they sometimes throw you a googly.
Or it could be that the router hadn't actually been unplugged for over a month.

One of those TIVO box things with a router connected. The actual service comes through a fibre optic to my house/TIVO box. Damn fine service when it works. Has Sky back in the 90's, went over to the then Cable and Wireless and I was astounded at the difference. That's 20 years ago though, and I understand that if went over to BT they'd use the same fibre-optic system.

Just test the speeds and if they are below the threshold get on to virgin to sort it. I mean if contention makes it that bad then **** me the speed must really drop, unless you are transferring large amounts of data which I assume you are not, I assume you get problems with browsing ect? when it rains
Your speed should never be slow enough to impact browsing and streaming from contention tbh, not in this day and age.
I pay 28 euro for 120meg line, contended, should never drop below 80meg, so contention would never be an issue for me.

Actually dongs, if it was contention you would suffer every evening when everyone gets home from school and or work
fyi electromagnetic interference is a possibility when it rains
