Well deduced <ok>

Ben Foster travelled with the Watford party for the game at Old Trafford on 31 January 2007. After 18 months on United’s books, it was the first time he had ever seen the ground. Seven days later he made his England début there.

Born in Narbonne 1913 he wrote around a thousand songs, one of which has been listened to in it's various forms millions of times. Jailed for 28 days for homosexual activities he died in 2001 and now has a museum devoted to him in the house where he was born.

Who is he?

O.k. I am describing a football team.

They entered for one World Cup and one Olympic football tournament.
Despite going out of the World Cup in the initial qualifying rounds they were invited as honorary guests to the final and joined in the victory celebrations of the winners.
Nearly all of the players came from the same club side - a club which still exists and was once denied promotion despite finishing first in the second division of the league they were playing in.
In the World Cup they played in one of the only matches in history where the national anthem of the referee was played.

Who am I describing ? If you know the answer then go ahead and set the next question because I have to go out.

Clues needed here ? Their only ever appearance in the World Cup was in 1954 and in 1956 the territory became legally part of one of it's neighbouring countries (voluntarily) thus ceasing to exist in International football.

All yours Yorkie. The Saarland national football team (representing the French protectorate of Saarland) which became part of Germany in 1956. In the 1954 qualifying tournament they played Germany, and, because the Saarland had no national anthem and did not want to use the French one the anthem of the referee (Dutch) was used. F.C. Saarbrucken won the French 2nd division 1948-49 but were not admitted into the first division.

There were tickets on sale for the Birmingham FA Cup game.

Now another Watford question.

What links Gabriele Angella, Bobby Howfield, Marlon King and George Reilly?

Still WFC related - who said "I knew ... was ten feet tall, but didn't know he was thirty feet wide too.", who was he talking about and what was the occasion?
