Gerrard is 34, our nemesis of the past two tournament Pirlo is 36. Gerrard had a fairly ordinary tournament, certainly by his standards, however I personally wouldn't say he is totally finished at this level. It's not as if we've got an outstanding wealth of centre-midfielders who play in similar role to Gerrard at the moment. Henderson and Wilshere as centre-mid pairing at the stage of their careers that they are currently at would cause me concern personally.
Also I don't get the over the top criticism and writing off of Rooney either, for my money he's been our best player this tournament and was desperately unlucky not to have bagged himself a hat-trick in the Uruguay game. People are getting carried away about some of our younger prospects as well. For all the hype and praise that has been thrown at Sterling in the past week or so I struggle to see what he did in either game that was anything special at all? Don't recall him taking on and beating a single Uruguayan on Thursday, I've no doubts he is going to be a top player and hopefully have a good international career, but to call him the answer at the moment is way off the mark if you ask me.
Can't stand the bloke, and he has definitely made the rod for his own back, but I have no doubt that if John Terry had been at the back we would have already qualified by now and tomorrow's game would be a decider to see who tops the group, rather than a dead rubber where we give some of our squad players a chance.
Ah well, just a shame the bloke is such a complete ****er I guess.
