I'm not sure what the nuts and bolts of it are, but he was picked for 2 friendlies prior to his choice to play for Spain. Scolari is funny with his selections though as their 2nd best centre half in Miranda, who has had a phenomenal season at the heart of Atletico's defence, hasn't been picked and their best left back Felipe Luis hasn't either. Scolari definitely wanted to take him to Brazil as he said prior to Costa's decision that he was turning his back on a dream or something.
Some managers don't fancy some players but considering what Brazil have as striker options to not twist Costa's arm is nothing short of mental. With Villa over the hill though Spain also needed a striker so maybe they just have better arm twisters!

Rooney can't get into the England side as a no 10 and England have no other established no 10s Mata can't get into a Spain side that lost 5-1 and did not even play a no 10. What's that say about Mata and Rooney? Nothing: they are both very good players
What's happened to the Brazilian names. Used to have Socrates, zico, Carlos Alberta. Now we have Bernard, Fred and jo. Disappointing all round really.

I don't agree with being able to switch full stop. It's horrendous that somebody can play two games for one country and then **** off to another.
Mata should get a chance for Spain in the next game, he offers more penetration than any of there current midfielders. Del Bosque has totally lost the plot though, selecting Torres in his squad, and then bringing him on with the likes of Negredo, Fabregas and Mata sat on the bench. Difficult to say how good Costa is, for the previous two seasons he played out of position (like Rooney) to make way for Falcau. What i can say is that Atletico either play the perfect game for a loan striker or they have a fantastic talent spotter because the last five strikers they have had have been coveted by every big team in Europe.
