Academy graduate wins praise from former skipper.
Senior professional development coach has praised Liam Agnew after the midfielder became the latest Academy graduate to make it into a senior matchday squad.
Agnew, who turned 19 recently, was named on the bench for the 2-2 draw at Manchester City and was in and around the first-team squad for the remainder of the season.
He is a fantastic team member who knows what he wants to do individually
- Ball on Agnew
The midfielder made a particular impression on Ball during a post-season trip to California whilst still a member of the U18 side, and the former Sunderland skipper says the local lad has made plenty of progress.
Agnew got a taste of first-team football during a loan spell at Boston United in 2013-14 and became an integral member of the side before returning to the Stadium of Light.
“When we talk about players’ development, you have to see the raw ingredients,” Ball said.
“We look Liam to California a couple of years ago in my last year as U18 coach, and we played some university sides whose players were 23 or 24 years old, while we were 18.
“Liam was quite small compared to them, and they were putting it about a bit, but I watched him really closely and his football intelligence was unbelievable.
“His next year was a bit hit and miss but he’s worked very, very hard this year and played well. He is a fantastic team member who knows what he wants to do individually.”
He added: “Dennis Green at Boston said he’d like to take Liam on loan, and that spell really helped him.
“To say Liam is an under-19 player, he’s done smashing this year.”

Cheap replacement for Colback?

He clocked up a fair amount of goals last season from midfield, not seen him play but followed the the Reserves last season and according to the reports he was at the heart of everything. Can't see him as Colback's replacement, certainly not in his style. We don't need a like for like for Colback anyway, what was Colback? Not defensive or attacking, not a box to box or a deep lying play maker, do we need another average Midfielder who can do the basics but excels at nothing? I don't think we do. He I doubt he'll replace anyone squad wise as he doesn't need to be registered, he'll be an addition yes but no replacement. He'll probibly go on loan with a recall option should we get light. Let's try and get the lad some regular Championship games.

Scored a Corker for the youth team on there goal of the season competition. Glad he's been given a chance

Sounds promising. <ok>

Seen him play once, never stopped running and looked tidy enough. Wouldn't say he stood out but Gus must see something in him.

Hopefully given a go in preseason.
