If he doesn't get near triple figures given the state of our squad then I predict the booing on opening season day will be even worse than last season.
I don't really care how much he spends as long as he brings the right people in. The squad has been thin for a long time now. However I think you're right, the expectations are probably higher than they've ever been on the transfer front, especially considering the lift everyone had from the Ozil signing.
Bringing in the right people will cost money... intrinsically linked. You pay peanuts, you get Francis Jeffers.
Way too simplistic. What is it with this obsession with spending huge amounts of money anyway ? The spuds pissed 110m up the wall last season and where did it get them ? Chelsea and City both threw **** loads of cash at their problems before the mud finally stuck. We need to get some players in key positions this summer and a striker is going to come at a premium, but I don't see us needing to spend triple figure millions on this squad at all. I'll take a punt here at what I think it will cost us. Striker 30m RB 10m DM 15m 55m total We have Campbell, Ox, Podolski, Santi who can play on the left. Theo, Ox, Gnabry, Rosicky who can play on the right. What we need is a striker to augment our most forward option as we can't rely on Giroud for the whole season. A replacement RB is a necessity and I think we need a holding/DM midfield player to shield the back four. That's it. We don't need to go buying 6-7 players this summer and spending mega cash in the process.
Not necessarily - Ramsey was £5m, Vieira was £3.5m, Van Persie was £2.75m... Jeffers on the other hand was one of the highest transfer fees Arsenal had paid up to that point. There are also plenty of examples of expensive players flopping badly. The value of a transfer can't really be judged until the player plays.
Backup GK too but that should be rather cheap. If Verm goes, though I doubt that will happen, CB to replace him (though Aurier can also play CB). We don't need a complete squad overhaul like some are suggesting
Morata was being suggested at 24m, Balotelli at 20m, Benzema at 25m. Personally I think a bid of 30m would get us Mandzukic. Back up GK would be next to nothing, possibly even on a free. Vermaelen's agent has said he's going nowhere and even if he did, Aurier can play CB too.
So if Vermaelen goes (along with Sagna) you'd just replace them both with just one player? We'd still need a centre back. I want Balotelli or Benzema. Unfortunately I'm worried last night pushed Benzema's price up by about £10m :S Mandzukic I don't rate.
This came out 9 mins ago: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...al-to-join-Manchester-United-this-summer.html I'm yet to see anything from anyone about him staying? Any source on his agents words? Cym said Ornstein had said he wasn't moving but there's nothing on his twitter and he's yet to produce a source on that either.
With the puma deal i have heard puma want to bring ballotelli to the league as he is there most marketable player he is a brand similar to ronaldo and beckham i can see puma financing part of the deal to have there most marketable player playing in the premier league in a puma kit. i can see this happening also i can see wenger guiding him he has had the domination aproach of mancini and maureen but i think the experienced father figure role that wenger would bring will finnaly let the world see the true ballotelli
That's a pretty weak analogy to make though during the silly season. There are a hundred smokeless fires burning across the media outlets every day. If Vermaelen does go then I agree we'd need to buy another CB as well as a RB, but remember this CB will be a back up, so we don't need to go spending mega bucks.
Agreed. If he goes, we need a GK, DC, DR, DM, AML and ST. Assuming one is Campbell then that's five purchases. A striker who's worth it won't be any less than £30-40m. Backup goalkeeper and centre back shouldn't be more than £10-15m combined. Aurier should be about £10m. DM for one who's worth it (ie. better than Flamini) will be £10-20m at least.
You want us to buy a DR ? I know the Tories want to flog off the NHS but isn't that taking things a bit too far ?
Don't forget Jeffers was very highly rated when we bought him and most pundits at the time thought he was a good buy
