Google it yerself We were talkin about it in the boozer when that point was raised none of us could remember a European team getting close to winning one. My memory is ****ed, and the others know their fitba a damn sight better than me, so am more than happy to take their word for it.
Up until Brazil won in 2002, only one team had won a WC outwith it's own continent. (Brazil @ Sweden 1958) But European teams have done well in the American world cups so to say that no one has 'got close' is typical NL pub bullshit, Czecholsovakia got to the Final in '68 (Chile), Italy in '70 (Mexico), Netherlands in '78 (Argentina), W Germany in '86 (Mexico), Italy in '94 (USA), indeed in 2002, Germany got to the final in Japan and Spain were the first European team to win a WC outwith the continent, but only Brazil had managed to do that previously. #GSTQ
When I was wee, I loved football and stats. Particularly the WC stats, I used to know the where it was held, the winners, who they beat in the final etc. Sadly, I couldn't make a career out of it and now I build sheds for a modest living.
