Wenger is an exceptional case and I also think that Arsenal fans aren't worried half their team will leave. If Mauricio was definitely seeing out his contract, the board would have made an announcement to that effect to stop the rumours.

Maybe he is, I can't think of many other managers who stay in a job long enough for their contract to be renewed, but Arsenal have sold plenty of players recently.

I'm not sure the board would say anything, didn't someone (Reed? Krueger?) recently say something like "I don't understand all the fuss being made - Pochettino still has a year left on his contract."?

EDIT: Moyes's Everton contract had almost run out when he decided to take the Man Utd job so there's another example.

Sorry, I can't understand the aggression towards MP at all. He has a year left on his contract. If if was only a month then yes, let's panic but a year? I know that this response will piss some of you off, but it is a fact. Apart from fans demanding a signiture to settle their anxiety, there is no particular reason this needs to be concluded immediately. Players contracts are different of course, but managers have little "transfer value" to lose. And the players are all on nice long deals.
Try to be a bit more "Doris Day" about the whole thing. I wouldn't want any of you to blow a gasket!

As I said, if the board were sure he would see out his last year, they would announce it again to settle rumours. The players aren't certain he will see out the final year either...if he was, he would definitely have told them and they are as confused as us.

They would announce that a new contract had been signed, yes. Why would they announce that an employee who has a contract will fulfill that contract? There is no need at all, in fact I would go further. Statements of that sort are usually made when there is a strong fear that that someone wants out. It's just like when a Chairman expresses full confidence in a manager. Usually 2 weeks before they are sacked. I am really comfortable with silence. Silence is good. Not as good as an OS notification of a contract. But good.

If the board accepts that MP can stay, to see out his last year, with no promise of him signing a new contract, when the current one expires, how far can they trust him with safeguarding the squad?

I don't know that I would be comfortable knowing that MP had the final say on transfers in and out, in the knowledge that he will be coming to the end of his contract, with no guarantees that he will stay around, next year.

What would the response be if he sold of the Crown Jewels, from the squad, then walked away next summer, possibly to a club that had bought one or two of our players?
What are the chances on him signing decent players, for Saints, when they know he won't commit to extending his own contract?
I wouldn't like us to end up with a bunch of money grabbing mercenaries, much like those that helped kill off Pompey.
Players that don't care who is in charge or who they are playing for, so long as the money is right.

IF the delay is being caused by MP, hedging his bets, then I'm in the camp that says "**** off".

Isn't there a sign, in the dressing room, that says "The name on the front of the shirt, is more important than the name on the back of it."?

That's how I feel about this now.

We know nothing of why it is taking time to sort out either way. Best just relax and go with the flow.

I agree with Fran. If Pochettino were staying, he would announce something to settle his own players. If you knew your team's big priority this summer was to keep all it's players, and supposedly thar depends upon you... Why would you risk losing Lallana, Shaw, etc.?

Or maybe he wants to know whether he can keep the players or if they are sold whether he can spend the money we get for them? There are loads of things that can be going on, we just have to wait.

It's a Catch-22 situation. Pochettino is more likely to stay if he knows Lallana and Shaw etc. are staying, and Lallana, particularly, is more likely to stay if he knows Poch is staying. Can't they just talk to each other, and then tell us something? Any news would be better than this seemingly endless speculation!

Next week I reckon.

Apparently they did, at the Chilworth Arms yesterday.

I'm 100% in agreement with you Channon, managers regularly enter the final year of their contract and go on to sign a new one. I think if he was going to go, he either would have by now or more realistic, we would know for sure that he was in discussions with them.
