Yes Alsace was disputed territory. But no that is not the answer as to why German Shepards are called Alsatians in the UK. The Great Dane and Alsatian are both German dogs, however us Brits didnt want anything to do with the Germans during and after the World Wars - so we started calling them Alsatians and Great Danes. The French call them "Dogue Allemand" and "Berger Allemand" --> which would be "German Mastiff" and "German Shepard"
