Oh dear, oh dear.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/shrewsbury/9519570.stm It's not done and dusted yet, but you got wish we had sorted this out 6 months ago. A fantastic prospect.
I don't go along with this "we should have offered him a contract 6 months ago". His agent would probably have said "Hang on, you must be worth something. Let's wait until we are offered other things." The unfair situation which exists whereby our young players can be pinched by Scottish clubs for nowt (which could be the case with Taylor) needs to be addressed by the powers that be.
That would be a europe wide ruling unless they made it an agreement between scotland and englands FAs. As has been discussed, he only started playing games in the spring so no one knew what he would end up doing. It would be a shame to lose him and I hope negotaitions end up in him signing a deal, but we can't be held to ransom over it. We do have Ainsworth who plays in that position too, and he just needs to play regular football to perform at his best.
*Monkeys The FA contradict the saying "Pay Peanuts and you get Monkeys"- We probably pay an arm and a leg yet to say we get Monkeys is an understatement!
Dead right. We would have offered him peanuts (if anything) before February and I can't believe his agent would have allowed him to sign any contract we offered after that, knowing they'd be free to negotiate the best deal in the summer. Sometimes we just have to accept we're a League 2 club and players will choose a better deal somewhere else. Some people seem to want to make it a hanging offence every time a player leaves. If they feel that strongly perhaps they'd like to pay more for their tickets so the club's budget is big enough to offer inflated contracts.
Totally agree KDS.. Even if we had offered him a contract all those months ago, there's no guarantee he would've signed.
let him go we are not going to be held to ransom by an 18 year old opportunist. good luck to him whever he goes. sad to lose him but gt will find more experience elsewhere
This thing with Scottish clubs seems to be an odd one because Premiership clubs, or what have you, appear to pay compensation when signing under age players from elsewhere in Europe.
I guess I'm just gutted, he is by far the best player out of youth system since Joe Hart, and we made 1.5 million from him....
Makes you wonder. Joe Hart born and bred locally and had a definite affinity with the club which neither Humphrey or Taylor appear to have even though they were given a break by Shrewsbury. As a mater of interest what contracts were offered to Joe Hart when he was at Shrewsbury and when were these offered? I cannot remember
Too early to say that. Bradshaw could be a better player, so could Goldson, given time. We can't expect to compete financially with an SPL club (which seems the likely destination) as they get far more TV money (why that should be is a mystery - I'd rather clean the fish tank than watch the drearily uncompetitive and largely unskilled SPL, but there you are).
Does not look very good for new season at present. The reality is as already been said, we are just a League 2 club and any player with real potential will set their sights higher.
"Too early to say that. Bradshaw could be a better player, so could Goldson, given time" 18 years old and scored 7 goals from right wing in his debut season which didn't start until after Xmas is mighty fine though.....
Leslie is Scottish and has previously signed contracts with the club. Different kettle of sardines, I would say.
