Yet again sports throws up a remarkable story.

A 17-year-old Gaelic football-playing Catholic from Northern Ireland has signed professional soccer forms with Glasgow Rangers, for so long a bastion of Protestantism and still the favoured team of people of that religion in the province.

In the world of professional sport personal beliefs or backgrounds matter little – except perhaps to the die-hard fans. Talent is the common currency and young Aaron McGregor displays plenty of that. Let us hope that he fulfils his promise and becomes the soccer equivalent of our other bright young star, Rory McIlroy.

Phil MacGobblegiver and Webelbhoy will be out throwing stones in Belfast tonight.
 
It was bound to happen sooner or later - its 2011 after all. I hope the lad does well and if some of the knuckle-draggers in the Rangers support burn their season ticklets then that's a bonus for everyone.
 
Alan Maybury could've been the first Irish Catholic to play but for intimidation from his own community. Let's hope that this lad makes the grade and suffers none of the abuse Maybury's family got.
