Sorry can't get that info to back it up, I'm at work so can't get onto any sites that talk about betting and odds.
Besides that one comment wasn't the whole point of my original post.

As I can't prove my statement, would you accept they were tipped to at least break into the top 4 after selling their best player and buying a number of quality replacements with the money? that was my point.

I'm aware that it's your opinion and I accept it as a point. You seem to be having three consecutive discussions of this type (on Guly's too) where you won't give wriggle room to what other people are saying. There's one common denominator here, but I guess I'm fighting a losing battle here.....

Not at all, I completely accept your premise, but I don't happen to agree with it. As you have made clear you understand my point, we can agree to disagree. FWIW though I think Shaw deserves a bit more credit than for everyone to assume he will kick off in a big way if he's denied a transfer.

Ok yes, top 4 I can accept. They were starting from a much more advanced position than we will be though.

Have to agree with PTF on this one. The ball is 100% in Southampton's court.

Shaw will have four years left on his contract, he has been associated with this club for 10 years. Do people honestly give him so little credit to think that he will strain his relationship with the club if they refused an offer?
Pochettino distanced himself in the last press conference by saying it would be the clubs decision. Personally I would like to keep Shaw as I think transfers in can be very hit and miss and we could potentially strengthen our squad with the sales of Osvaldo and maybe Ramirez.

Purely from a business point of view, if Luke Shaw is valued at £30 million as an 18 year old, with a single England cap, how much is he likely to be worth in 2 or 3 years? We know his potential, and to sell him now is to fall into the same trap as we did with Walcott, Bale, and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Let him reach maturity as a player with us and see who we have coming through from the Academy to replace him, and sell him for real megabucks, not the fraction of his potential value we would get now.

I can't see anyone paying more than £30m for a left back. He will be a better player in a few years, but I don't think a club would necessarily pay any more money for him.

May 22nd - Man Utd sack manager David Moyes.

May 23rd - Luke Shaw signing imminently for Man Utd.

    Right...

You're a month ahead of the rest of us, that's awesome. How did we do against Everton, Swansea and Man United?

To be honest, I doubt Shaw's value is likely to get much higher than £30m. But I think he's worth more than that to us if he remains a Southampton player. This is a player who is a likely regular for England and whose name kids will wear on their shirts. This is the kind of player that makes people from all around the world interested in our club who otherwise wouldn't be, and I don't think £30m buys you that kind of attention.

Exactly so. As a player on the pitch, Adam Lallana is actually more valuable to Southampton, but Luke Shaw carries a heck of a lot of media and fan recognition. As the seasons roll by, Luke will become enormously valuable to Southampton FC beyond his ability as a player, if he merely stays a left-back of course. If he moves to midfield his player value may rise even further.

I think he's too good a defender to be converted into a winger, it'd be a bit of a waste

Well we'll have to sell a lot of shirts to get passed the 6m generated from commercial income last year..... Shaw suddenly going to bring on 3million new fans buying a shirt?

But hey, maybe I'm just being too picky :)

Maybe he should have made it clear this was his opinion rather than him having privileged conversations with lots of football people :)

Boot. Other. Foot. Although I'm sure you'll say differently.

Not the "non-playing" value that PTF is on about. We are Southampton, not Real Madrid.

Er, yeah it's a matter of record. Spurs were objectively not anyone's favourites for the title.

And we never will be if we keep selling our stars.

He's not worth £30m now, he's probably worth about £8m. The rest is United paying for his potential.
