    Spartans seal Senior Cup spot.

This season's Techflow Group Northumberland Senior Cup Final will be contested between Newcastle Reserves and Blyth Spartans, after the Northern Premier League side overcame Ashington at the second attempt on Tuesday.

Following a 2-2 draw at Woodhorn Lane last month, the sides met again at Croft Park in front of another 600+ crowd, Blyth eliminating the reigning cup holders 3-2.

The final will be staged at SJP on Tuesday April 22nd with a 7pm kick-off and is played to a finish on the night - via extra time and penalties if required.

Since lifting the trophy after beating Blue Star in 1994, Spartans have lost nine times in the final - six of them against Newcastle - the most recent coming in 2011.

And their task this year is made no easier by the scheduling of a home league game on Easter Monday - just over 24 hours ahead of their visit to Gallowgate.

More thoughtlessness by the powers that be, wouldn't you think they'd be a bit more considerate? I might go along to support the Spartans.

I remember when I was a kid my Pa always thought highly of them.

Put themselves on the football map with the cup run in 78, if we hadn't screwed up at Wrexham they would have played us in the next round.

That would have been a nice little earner for them.

Heaven knows they could do with a few bob.

If Ashington had won the semi-final then (I think) it would have been a re-run of the final that my dad ran the line for in 1978 (again, I think). I remember sitting in the directors box for that game with my mum and sister and going into the reception after the game with all the players and thinking that was the best day of my life and that it couldn't get any better. As it turned out I wasn't far wrong!

Edit: I meant if it had been a Blyth v Ashington Final

Sure, just bang on Ashley's door and demand them. Show him what you're really made of.

That was a cracking night, with over 42,000 filling SJP.
Shoulder, Carney (Toon Legends or perhaps not!).

They definitely are. I was there that night, and at the game where Alan Shoulder scored a brilliant lob - I think from memory it was a 4-2 win against QPR - but I might be mixing up games. Steve Carney is a legend just for not being David Barton (of "David Barton, stop fartin, the match is startin" fame). It was a real shame that his life was cut short to that horrible disease.

You're right, legends at a difficult time under McGarry.
Not forgetting another local non-league player from North Shields - Peter Cartwright.
He along with Alan Shoulder and Cass all scored on New Years Day 1980 against the unwashed.
