What was with the Ben Hamer abuse last night? Any poor kick was greeted with derision and he was alternately criticised for distributing too quickly and not quickly enough. He was forced to be playing 80 yard pinpoint balls to Jackson, who was the only Charlton player capable of winning it the air against his marker, small wonder some went off. And then he was cheered for firing it down the middle, with the predictable outcome that Sordell failed to beat the giant centre back. Felt it was a real shot in our own foot from the faithful.
I've found his distribution a bit puzzling recently, aiming the ball as near the left touchline as possible without kicking it out. Only last night the kicks started to actually go out.
Hamer is cocky bordering on arrogant. On Saturday he gestured to the Covered End (pointing at his eyes) after he was catcalled for punching a cross. His kicking is so poor he has been stuck with a bit of a reputation now, hence the ironic jeers last night.
He is the most frustrating player in my eyes, but his form up until last night has been decent so I will put the mistakes to the back of my mind. Didn't he have a problem with his eyes a while ago?
Yeah he had laser eye surgery the year after we won League One because he kept having problems with contacts. The criticism from the North Stand in the First-Half certainly didnt help the players in my view and it was making players panic and rush (i.e. with Hamer's distribution)... those who were moaning at him need to take a good look at themselves (failing that they need to watch the Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Reading highlights) cos if we'd have had Thuram in goal I doubt we'd have won any of those three let alone last night against Yeovil Oh and the irony... When Thuram made the mistakes against QPR the North Stand were calling for Hamer... Who are they gonna call for when Hamer makes mistakes?
Hamer brings a lot of it on himself through his comments on Twitter. He appears to be a cross between the village idiot from the Darling Buds of May, and Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney.
Hamer still worry's me, but he is the best we have ATM. Unless we send Thuarum back to Standard and recall Pope he'll be starting, I just hope he has more Leeds Pen saving moments then howlers.
Everyone here saying he's really worrying, since he came back from injury he's been probs our best player, 3 points at leeds, beating Wednesday, kept the scores against teams like Burnley, Derby and Leicester from being 6 or 7. Keeping is the hardest position on the team, you're an outcast and everyone thinks the job is easy. Yeah did had a howler last night for their 2nd goal but other players have had shockers so far recently and not been picked up on it, just because he's the keeper he's the one that everyone notices.
The most annoying part was when Dervite was going to take a free kick 15 yards inside our half, Hamer told him he'd take it then he kicks it out for a Yeovil goal kick...not the first time he's done it recently, but I guess if he didn't have weaknesses in his game he wouldn't be playing for us.
Even our best players are limited or as vol says they wouldn't play for us. When we get one that's not we have to sell them, even Manchester united had to sell Ronaldo ffs! I don't think Hamer will leave in the summer, I am actually surprised him and Morrison haven't been given new deals, seeing as Jackson and Wiggins have.
Dean Kiely... Greatest Shot stopper I've seen in a Charlton shirt (i'm only 21 so can't judge on Bob Bolder etc) but he was sh!te at kicking, rather have someone like that any day
As I soon as I read this I thought 'Dean Kiely' but as I scrolled down Ted beat me to it. Deano wasnt too bad. Up until this season I hadnt been sold on Hamer, does some silly things and comes across as a little arrogant but the keepers are a bit of a rare breed. I think since his injury Hamer has been by far one of our better players and I would far rather he try and distribute wide to a Jackson or Adjarevic who are far more capable in the air and risk conceding a throw in ahead of punting it down the middle to Reza and Sordell who 99 times out of 100 will lose the ball. I would far rather us (if we have to) lose possesion in the form of a throw in rather than in play down the middle of the pitch.
Hamer is after Schmeichel the best keeper in the championship for me don't get the criticism though the north upper does have it's fair quota of idiotic morons who can't wait to get on players backs ... Sadly
One of the best shot stoppers no doubt, but I wouldn't go as far to say best keeper sadly... still a very very good keeper at this level anyway
Then I guess it's lucky that the club pays him to play football and not post nice twitter messages. Am I really the only person that doesn't care about the personality of a player, as long as they get the job done on the pitch?
