Russell Slade is the longest serving manager in League One, as he's had his job for nearly four years. Nigel Pearson is the Championship's, with nearly two and a half years. Immense turnover, but I guess if you're doing well then your team gets promoted and you probably get poached and if you're doing badly then you'll get relegated and/or sacked.
gooner posting here in peace. imo Van Gaal could replace Moyles at manure at end of season so you won't get him. you need an elder statesman type manager who will stand up to Levy. what you really need is a new chairman as Levy is the cause of your problems, he is too short term as he sacks too many managers - isn't it about 13 managers in time that AW has been at Arsenal.
Wenger hasn't been sacked because he's been consistently successful, as defined by your board. Man Utd fans used to say the same thing about sticking by their manager. Their tune seems to have changed somewhat this season, for some reason.
I assume Levy's manager interview process goes like this: "we are pushing for the CL and have built a decent squad and training facilities. We've not yet found a manager who gets the very best out of the squad on a consistent basis and can get us into the 4th spot. Tell me why you are that person". They all give convincing answers but when they are actually appointed they soon claim the club is being over-ambitious. Hence they get the sack.
I thought Levy's manager interview process went like this: "Where do you see yourself in 2 years?" I jest. You're probably right.
The vicious circle seems to be (near the time of sacking) : - Chairman blames manager for not achieving quicker with the resource to hand. - Manager blames chairman for the resources available to him.
Despite our continuous managerial calamities, we're still an attractive proposition for any ambitious manager out there. Re-iterating what Power said, Levy will speak with potential managers and explain our ambitions, resources and how we want a manager who can match and possibly further those, the manager will do their upmost convincing Levy they are the man, get the job but once things go sour it's always the "best we'll get"/"overly ambitious"/"lack of resources" excuses that get thrown about. Appointing a quality manager that can bring success is extremely hard, if it were easy then all teams would have success. To Levy's credit he's tried almost every type of manager over the years. Santini at the time had just left the France post and so came with a big reputation, he left then Levy gave Jol the job. An unknown entity who was a catalyst in our rise back into a Europe. Jol got sacked and in came the manager who'd just won back to back UEFA Cups, won us our first trophy in years but League form was atrocious. He went and in came Harry, a man known for man management and being a veteran in the Prem, done superb for us and took us into the Champions League. He went then in came AVB, a young manager who had a torrid time with Chelsea but an impressive quadruple with Porto and was dubbed the new Mourinho. Clearly wasn't the new Jose and now we have Tim, again, another young manager but someone with no managerial experience though does have a lot of knowledge of the club having been a player and coach. It's not as if Danny boy has appointed a similar calibre of manager each and every time, he's mixed it up to unfortunately little success.
Would be nice to get a manager who thinks : 1. apart from the odd key positions, the squad is sound enough to play various formations of my chosing. 2. but they are UNDER-achieving 3. I will not accept #2, and things are going to change. Whoever you are in the pitch-side staff, from players to medics, if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
Our medics and/or training regimen need some kind of serious revisiting. The number of players we've had hurt has seemed far too many, especially this year (if, that is, injuries have not been a convenient fiction for some, as I suspect.)
Thankfully that didnt happen...but after west ham, chelsea, city, liverpool and city you can hardly blame me me for being less than optimistic.... But **** me we were pointless in more ways than one!
