He's only jut turned 21 a well. The rate of improvement this season from 2 years ago is huge and if he improves at the same rate over the next 3 or 4 years there is no reason he cannot be a first team full back for us.

Gotta be a boost for Mclaughlin too who probably has a higher potential than flanno. <ok>

Yup, and I hope BR is saying to thee young guys to use Flanagan as an example. Not because he's the best player to come out of it, but because he wasn't but he got his head down, worked hard and took his chance when he was given one.

It's like they always say, talent will get you so far, but determination and attitude will take you further.

Wisdom could be coming back with a load of experience as well, already has the body for the league but hopefully the hustle and bustle of the championship will sharpened him up as well.

Still not 100% convinced with him at RB. Strikes me similar to Richards. Will be stuck on the right because he's young but his build is that of a CB. I think that's partly what has caused injuries to Richards and also to a degree Kelly, by asking these guy to run up and down the wing all day which their bodies aren't built for.

He'd be a solid enough option at RB for a few games but not long term in my opinion.

Agreed. Thinking about Flanno I always thought Jack Robinson would make it before him as seemed less of a liability but fair play to the lad for putting in the hours and improving so much. I don't think he's ever going to be a star full back but will turn into a solid player who fully understands the club and will always put in 100%.

He's funny though cos when he plays he always think he looks like a fan who's won a competition or something to be in the team for a day

He's just like a young Carragher. Not gifted technically, very much a what you see is what you get and that's never less than 100%. He won't be a 10/10 match winner, but equally he'll never be a 4/10 absentee. Always a solid 6 or 7 from Jon and I like reliable defenders.

Arbeloa and Finnan always spring to mind. As you say, never be a star by winning everything at the back and making 3 goals etc, but he'll always be a 7 or thereabouts.

Jon Flanagan - Won seven tackles, completing both take-ons and making seven clearances.

  11. I really wish Flanno wasn't a local lad because I think are playing on that tag far too much. who gives a **** where he is from when it comes to the team? Sure, its nice to have a local lad in the side but that counts for absolutely ****ing squat as far as the team is concerned. If he was Brazilian (and I ****ing hate this argument myself but its true here), everyone under the sun would be creaming themselves over him!

Was at the match and they targeted him for sure. He's a great, solid, honest player but DOES lack pace....that much is clear. Without that, am not sure he'll be our #1 choice in the long term but am certainly happy to have him now <ok>

I disagree - I think the fact that he is a young local lad means he gets more praise than he actually deserves.

I'm not slagging him off, I think he has been solid and versatile, and is becoming a decent utility defender. Impressed with the improvement with his ability on the ball and his passing.

Provides a solid option in the squad.

Re. Wisdom - I can't remember who said it (Barrett perhaps) but they mentioned that Rodgers does see him as a RB. He's been brilliant for Derby in that position and would provide good competition in that position but can also play at CB.

The number of players we have that can play in a number of positions is fantastic. <ok>

I think you miss the importance to a club like LFC of having local lads playing in the first team. It's not vital to how we perform and it doesn't mean they should get special preference from the manager but it's a link between the pitch and the stands that you underestimate. It means a lot to those of us born and bred here and more importantly it makes the player himself more focussed and committed to the club and to working hard to stay in the team. Plus it saves us a shed load of cash having youth coming through (wherever they are from), cash we can invest elsewhere.

  20. I certainly don't favour anyone because of what their passport says or where they grew up. I slated Spearing for example. On the other side, Insua got overly praised when he broke through; Argentinian!

On the other hand, Jamie Carragher wasn't the best defender in the world but we wouldn't have swapped him for anyone. Was it because he was a local lad? Well, sort of. He didn't get picked because he was a scouser, he got pick because that scouse blood gave him passion and spirit for the the club, a never die attitude, those attributes got him in the team. Why could that not apply to Flanno? He has the same spirit, drive, passion, etc.
