The term "mackem" was popularised in the 70's by Geordies to disassociate themselves from you. John Hall wasn't around till about 1990.

I'm sure John Hall was around in the 1970's, and by some accounts I have heard he was actually a season ticket holder at Sunderland. However, I did distinguish with the term Mackem which come about in the 70's with Hall's 'Geordie Nation' ****e which was in the 90's...
Was that about the time that they would get sick of playing Barcelona?
Anyhow, hows it gannin on the ticket front marra?
Still on the hunt mate...However, I have just found out that Sunderland Uni have some pairs of tickets up for grabs for staff/students which will be allocated by means of a draw from all those that apply..So far I have about 25 people applying on my behalf, so you never know eh!!!

First time I heard the word Mackem was in 1982. I was a apprentice Shipwright with Austin and Pickersgill.
The first year of training took place in Hebburn. Never forget the first day walking in to a torrent of abuse from the Swans lads...Did we care? Did we fook. We got paid more.
From that day since the word Mackem is for me a badge of honour. Anything is better than getting Geordie, apart from Scouse, Manc, Welsh, Jock or bloody Cockney....lol

Badge of honour. That's what I said on an earlier thread. Its what separates us from them. They started this Geordie nation crap so I'm happy to be dis-associated from them by taking on the mantle of Mackem.
