Sad to hear of this great players departure! He was in the Preston side in the 2nd ever Chelsea game I saw! 1959's first home game of the season and he scored one against us! My hero (at the time) Greavesie got one for us in a 4-4 draw! I was now becoming addicted to the Blues!
Never saw the man play, but history suggests he is worth his place as one of the games greats. Always sad to lose men of his calibre.
Its weird CP, what players jump back into your memory, and sometimes they aren't just Blues! I saw (Sir)Stanley Matthews at the Bridge and Roy Bentley at Fulham! We are lucky to have so many great players to look back at !
That was a few years before my first stay in the UK. From the era of late 60's the ones who took my eye were Rodney Marsh, Brooking, Roy McFarland and Colin Todd, and the rascal Charlie George. Oh and of course Liam Brady. These apart from the obvious Chelsea heroes especially Alan Hudson. They had less money, were miles behind in their training and fitness, but seemed to have a joy and flair on and off the pitch not there anymore. How lucky you are to have seen Mathews, Finney and Bentley
