I disagree - A lot of the goals we've conceded have been from us losing the ball in precarious positions. Not all of these are Mig's fault at all but retaining possession from the keeper and being able to pick players our with a pass and relieve pressure DOES keep clean sheets. Migs is a great shot stopper though; better than Reina but the way we play, we need a more complete keeper. Just my opinion of course!
minger's thrown a couple in no question. but its not about him making errors its about distribution. he's improves as the season's gone on form fairly poor to average. I'm not sure where he'll go. I think to denigrate reina however by saying he's not as good at shot stopping is revisionist. Reina is a f'n great shot stopper.
Migs had better stats when we bought him and I think he is better than Reiner at stopping shots. That's not to say Reina is bad. My argument is that I'd take Reina as an all round keeper every day over Migs, who for me is stronger in one area.
I think the thread is about us probably not achieving 4th? It's all media bollox that interprets who is doing well: Everton are having a 'great season' spurs are 'lacklustre' and we barely get a mention! There is 3 points between us all...
so you dont think we are under performing as well? half our defence is injured at mo as well which isnt great.
Wouldn't swap Reina for Migs. I'm more than happy with Migs as he won us a few points and made some cracking saves. Reina seems to be one of those players who gets better once he leaves the club. He's been dodgy in Serie A and no matter how good he is with his feet, he became a liability for us. Migs distribution isn't the best but look who he has to pass to - Flanno and Cissokho aren't exactly Maldini and Cafu, whilst Skrtel isn't a naturally technical player, and Kolo is bonkers. (By the way, there are some harsh comments on Toure. He wasn't brought in to be a starter, he was experienced cover - and he's playing as LCB, further proof that it's not that easy to switch sides - i.e. for those who think Sakho and Agger can play together.) Then he can hit the ball long but who can hit it to? We're not exactly the most physical team in the league.
Mingolet has been a mixed bag for me, his shot stopping is fairly good but his distribution is just plain awful sometimes. I 100% agree about Toure, he's been shocking bad since we played Hull away and hopefully he will be gone in the summer. That might sound harsh but that's how bad I think he is.
Sorry KKK, I don't think they (Spurs and Everton) are Underperforming.. With regards to Spurs Totsfan... Underperforming... really, how so? When sacked AvB had he not had the best start to the season you guys ever had in the PL? Since then You've won 4, drew 2 and lost 1? How's that under-performing? Me thinks you maybe getting ahead of yourself a wee bit? Any better than that and you'll be league leaders and you're not that good! We, on the other hand are over performing, of all the teams in the top 7, I think we (maybe even Everton) have least depth to our squad (no ones fault other than our own of course). True, we've been carried by the form of the SAS this year but which team hasn't be relient of a player or two recently, Messi, Ronaldo, Bale for you lot last, RvP for Untied. We have all the top sides to play at Home, where we've been pretty decent this year. Not saying we're gonna finish 4th, far from it, battle for top 4 is between teams 4th-7th and it's gonna go down to the wire as teams this year will continue to slip up..

Their stats are pretty similar this season - Reina: 16 games, 48 saves, 5 clean sheets. Mignolet: 24games, 75 saves, 7 clean sheets. So this doesn't mention distribution etc but there's hardly any difference let alone a 'dodgy' performing Reina. I'm with mito on this, we shoved Reina out too soon.
Id rather have a goalkeeper that keeps goals out of our net than have one who can ping a pass to the other stand yet lets in dodgy goals. 1. Reina had a few seasons of awful form where he made sloppy mistakes and couldn't stop many that were shot from outside of the box. 2. He openly flirted with and made his interest in Barca public. At one point he said he would stay if he didn't get an offer from them. Valdes announces he is leaving. 3. Reina's form suddenly improves a little. We play a bit better. 4. Transfer window about to open, we are clearly looking to replace the outgoing Reina. Negotiations probably begin with Mignolet slightly before Valdes announces he is staying for one more season. 5. We sign Mignolet as replacement and Reina's status is uncertain. I'm not opening that can of worms again but Reina had to go due to the position he put the club in. Sure he would have been great on the bench but Casillas would be a fantastic third choice too. Its simply not happening. One would have to play. Top keepers don't just drop to the bench (club politics aside). I personally believe Reina's form improved when his chances of going to Spain did too. Was he looking for a transfer? I don't know. He had too many mistakes and lapses in concentration for a while for me to think he could sustain his decent form. His distribution is probably the best in the world for any keeper but faced with a choice I'd leave that to the outfield players. If you can't stop shots then why play a keeper? Like they said, stick Gerrard in there and we will be set.
Would be better to see the shot to saves ratio which will give you a much better idea of who is performing better. Mig is in the 70's I believe (or at least he was before a slight turn in form). Reina was significantly lower in his last season here.

Migs is fine. We didn't know if Reina was coming or going so we had to buy. We did and Mignolet will keep improving as he players more. He's still young for a keeper. I feel safer with Mignolet in goal and don't worry about silly mistakes as much - anecdotal I know, but that's how I feel. That kind of thing can rub off on defenders too. Disagree with the hoofing thing in part. Mignolet, moreso in the last few weeks, has really tried to look for passes out but usually there really aren't many options or the opposition are pressing right back to our 18yard. Against West Brom especially, I remember the ball going out to the fullbacks, who then had to turn backwards to the CBs who then had to turn back to the Keeper...and then hoofed out. I'd look at the midfield, personally. Where are they? Where are the triangles? Since we lost Lucas and Allen, we've lost control of the midfield and rely solely on counter attacking football and Gerrard's long, through balls to get goals. Unfortunately, you can expect more long balls from Mignolet until those two are restored to the starting line up. You don't get that by hoofing the ball. His passing is great, he has even started dropping the shoulder and carrying the ball alot more than he used to, stepping up to the halfway line looking for a better option. Cissokho, fine. He's been awful for us, but he played ok the last two games and at least he tries unlike a certain other RB. So I'll back him over Johnson, just for that reason. Gerrard making us play deeper. Kind of agree. He seems to almost play along side the CBs lately, but I wouldn't say he's playing bad. Last two games he's done well in the position. Yeah, we play deeper overall, but I think that's just one of the things we'll have to accept with starting Gerrard in this role. He's no spring chicken... I think Sterling has been great lately. We used to knock him for his strength and lack of confidence to run at people, his decision making and his final ball. Now he's much stronger and helping more successfully defensively because of it, he runs at and past people again and his decision making of when to hold and when to pass or run is much improved. That's a huge improvement in 6 months to a year. Final ball will come. He's a great little player who works hard and keeps on improving.
Pretty much agree with it all. We have lost a lot of control in the middle, which is a shame because we finally found a trio that looked mobile and fluid. I suppose this is how we have to set ourselves up until the summer. I know January is a difficult market to operate but we badly needed a midfielder.
